038:1

Hassanor Alapa : Sād,1312 ibt ko Qur’ān a khirk ko pananadm 1313

Muhsin Khan : Sad [These letters (Sad etc.) are one of the miracles of the Quran and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. By the Quran full of reminding.

Sahih International : Sad. By the Qur'an containing reminder...

Pickthall : Sad. By the renowned Qur'an,

Yusuf Ali : Sad: By the Qur'an, Full of Admonition: (This is the Truth).

Shakir : Suad, I swear by the Quran, full of admonition.

Dr. Ghali : Sad (This is name of a letter of the Arabic alphabet, and only Allah knows its meaning here) and (by) the Qur'an comprising the Remembrance.

Tafsir Jalalayn : Sād: God knows best what He means by this [letter]. By the Qur’ān bearing the Remembrance, that is, [bearing] the Pronouncement; or [what is meant is that the Qur’ān is a Book] of renown (the response to this oath has been omitted, in other words: ‘It is not as the Meccan disbelievers say, that there are many gods’).

Muhsin Khan : Nay, those who desbelieve are in false pride and opposition.

Sahih International : But those who disbelieve are in pride and dissension.

Pickthall : Nay, but those who disbelieve are in false pride and schism.

Yusuf Ali : But the Unbelievers (are steeped) in self-glory and Separatism.

Shakir : Nay! those who disbelieve are in self-exaltation and opposition.

Dr. Ghali : No indeed, (but) the ones who have disbelieved are in might and opposition.

Tafsir Jalalayn : Nay, but those who disbelieve, from among the people of Mecca, dwell in conceit, in self-glory and [in] disdain of faith, and defiance, disagreement with, and enmity towards, the Prophet (s).

038:3

Hassanor Alapa : Di bo dn pirapira i inantior Ami ko miaonaan iran a pd sa manga pagtaw na mithatawaga siran 1314 a da dn a masa a masa a kapalagoy (ko siksa)

Muhsin Khan : How many a generation We have destroyed before them, and they cried out when there was no longer time for escape!

Sahih International : How many a generation have We destroyed before them, and they [then] called out; but it was not a time for escape.

Pickthall : How many a generation We destroyed before them, and they cried out when it was no longer the time for escape!

Yusuf Ali : How many generations before them did We destroy? In the end they cried (for mercy)- when there was no longer time for being saved!

Shakir : How many did We destroy before them of the generations, then they cried while the time of escaping had passed away.

Dr. Ghali : How many a generation We caused to perish even before them, yet they called out, while time had lapsed for shirking (their doom).

Tafsir Jalalayn : How many — in other words, many — a generation, a community of past communities, We have destroyed before them, and they cried out, when the chastisement was sent down on them, when it was no longer the time for escape, that is to say, the time was not one for fleeing (the [suffixed] tā’ [of wa-lāta] is extra; the sentence is a circumstantial qualifier referring to the subject of [the verb] nādaw, ‘they cried out’) in other words, they called for help but the situation was such that there could be no escape or deliverance; but still the Meccan disbelievers have not taken heed from their example.

Muhsin Khan : And they (Arab pagans) wonder that a warner (Prophet Muhammad SAW) has come to them from among themselves! And the disbelievers say: "This (Prophet Muhammad SAW) is a sorcerer, a liar.

Sahih International : And they wonder that there has come to them a warner from among themselves. And the disbelievers say, "This is a magician and a liar.

Pickthall : And they marvel that a warner from among themselves hath come unto them, and the disbelievers say: This is a wizard, a charlatan.

Yusuf Ali : So they wonder that a Warner has come to them from among themselves! and the Unbelievers say, "This is a sorcerer telling lies!

Shakir : And they wonder that there has come to them a warner from among themselves, and the disbelievers say: This is an enchanter, a liar.

Dr. Ghali : And they wonder that a warner has come to them from among them, and the disbelievers have said, "This is a sorcerer, a (great) liar."

Tafsir Jalalayn : And they marvel that a warner has come to them from among themselves, a messenger from among their number, to warn them and to threaten them with [the punishment of] the Fire after resurrection — and this [warner] is the Prophet (s). And those who disbelieve (the overt noun [al-kāfirūnā] has replaced the [third person] pronominalisation) say, ‘This is a sorcerer, a liar.

038:5

Hassanor Alapa : Ba niyan bialoy so manga tuhan a tuhan a isaisa mataan a gianan na shayi a piakammsa

Muhsin Khan : "Has he made the aliha (gods) (all) into One Ilah (God - Allah). Verily, this is a curious thing!"

Sahih International : Has he made the gods [only] one God? Indeed, this is a curious thing."

Pickthall : Maketh he the gods One Allah? Lo! that is an astounding thing.

Yusuf Ali : "Has he made the gods (all) into one Allah? Truly this is a wonderful thing!"

Shakir : What! makes he the gods a single Allah? A strange thing is this, to be sure!

Dr. Ghali : Has he made the gods one God? Surely this is indeed a most wondrous thing."

Tafsir Jalalayn : Has he made the gods One God? — for he had said to them, ‘Say: there is no god except God’ — in other words [they objected]: how could one god suffice for all of creation? Lo! that is indeed a curious thing’.

038:6

Sahih International : And the eminent among them went forth, [saying], "Continue, and be patient over [the defense of] your gods. Indeed, this is a thing intended.

Pickthall : The chiefs among them go about, exhorting: Go and be staunch to your gods! Lo! this is a thing designed.

Yusuf Ali : And the leader among them go away (impatiently), (saying), "Walk ye away, and remain constant to your gods! For this is truly a thing designed (against you)!

Shakir : And the chief persons of them break forth, saying: Go and steadily adhere to your gods; this is most surely a thing sought after.

Dr. Ghali : And the chiefs among them went off, (saying), "Go on! (Or: March on!) And endure (patiently) with your gods; surely this indeed is a thing willfully (designed).

Tafsir Jalalayn : And the council from among them go about, from the place of their assembly at the house of Abū Tālib and [the place] where they heard the Prophet (s) say, ‘Say: there is no god except God’, saying, ‘Go!, they say to one another, go, and stand by your gods, adhere firmly to worship of them; lo! this, that has been mentioned concerning the Oneness of God, is indeed a thing sought, from us.

038:7

Hassanor Alapa : Da tanoai man’g sii ko agama a miaori, da ini a rowar sa piangantang 1316

Muhsin Khan : "We have not heard (the like) of this among the people of these later days. This is nothing but an invention!

Sahih International : We have not heard of this in the latest religion. This is not but a fabrication.

Pickthall : We have not heard of this in later religion. This is naught but an invention.

Yusuf Ali : "We never heard (the like) of this among the people of these latter days: this is nothing but a made-up tale!"

Shakir : We never heard of this in the former faith; this is nothing but a forgery:

Dr. Ghali : In no way did we hear of this in the last creed; decidedly this is nothing except a made-up device.

Tafsir Jalalayn : We never heard of this in the latter-day creed, namely, the creed of Jesus. This is surely [nothing] but an invention, [mere] lies.

Muhsin Khan : "Has the Reminder been sent down to him (alone) from among us?" Nay! but they are in doubt about My Reminder (this Quran)! Nay, but they have not tasted (My) Torment!

Sahih International : Has the message been revealed to him out of [all of] us?" Rather, they are in doubt about My message. Rather, they have not yet tasted My punishment.

Pickthall : Hath the reminder been unto him (alone) among us? Nay, but they are in doubt concerning My reminder; nay but they have not yet tasted My doom.

Yusuf Ali : "What! has the Message been sent to him - (Of all persons) among us?"...but they are in doubt concerning My (Own) Message! Nay, they have not yet tasted My Punishment!

Shakir : Has the reminder been revealed to him from among us? Nay! they are in doubt as to My reminder. Nay! they have not yet tasted My chastisement!

Dr. Ghali : Has the Remembrance been sent down on him from among us?" No indeed, (but) they are in doubt of My Remembrance; no indeed (but) they have not as yet tasted My torment.

Tafsir Jalalayn : Has the Remembrance, the Qur’ān, been revealed to him, Muhammad (s), out of [all of] us’, when he is neither the elder nor the noblest among us? In other words, it could not have been revealed to him (read a-unzila pronouncing both hamzas, or not pronouncing the second one, but in both cases inserting an intervening alif or without [this insertion]). God, exalted be He, says: Nay, but they are in doubt concerning My Remembrance, My revelation, that is, the Qur’ān, for they deny the one who has brought it. Nay, but they have not yet tasted My chastisement, and if they were to taste it, they would certainly believe the Prophet (s) in what he has brought — but then [in such a case] their belief [in the Prophet] would be of no benefit to them.

038:9

Hassanor Alapa : Ba zisii kiran so manga pondowa o limo o Kadnan ka a Mabagr a Baramora

Muhsin Khan : Or have they the treasures of the Mercy of your Lord, the All-Mighty, the Real Bestower?

Sahih International : Or do they have the depositories of the mercy of your Lord, the Exalted in Might, the Bestower?

Pickthall : Or are theirs the treasures of the mercy of thy Lord, the Mighty, the Bestower?

Yusuf Ali : Or have they the treasures of the mercy of thy Lord,- the Exalted in Power, the Grantor of Bounties without measure?

Shakir : Or is it that they have the treasures of the mercy of your Lord, the Mighty, the great Giver?

Dr. Ghali : Or even do they have in their presence the treasuries of your Lord's mercy, The Ever-Mighty, Superb Bestower?

Tafsir Jalalayn : Or do they possess the treasuries of your Lord’s mercy, the Mighty, the Victor, the Bestower?, [treasuries] such as prophethood and otherwise, so that they might give it to whomever they want?

Muhsin Khan : Or is it that the dominion of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them is theirs? If so, let them ascend up with means (to the heavens)!

Sahih International : Or is theirs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and what is between them? Then let them ascend through [any] ways of access.

Pickthall : Or is the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them theirs? Then let them ascend by ropes!

Yusuf Ali : Or have they the dominion of the heavens and the earth and all between? If so, let them mount up with the ropes and means (to reach that end)!

Shakir : Or is it that theirs is the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and what is between them? Then let them ascend by any

Dr. Ghali : Or even does the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them belong to them? Then let them ascend the means!

Tafsir Jalalayn : Or do they possess the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them? If this is what they claim: Then let them ascend by the means, [of ascension] that lead to the heaven and bring [down] some revelation (wahy) and then assign it exclusively to whomever they wish (am in both verses represents the [rhetorical] hamza of denial).

038:11

Hassanor Alapa : Adn a sondaro roo a ndaagn a pd ko manga lompokan

Muhsin Khan : (As they denied Allah's Message) they will be a defeated host like the confederates of the old times (who were defeated).

Sahih International : [They are but] soldiers [who will be] defeated there among the companies [of disbelievers].

Pickthall : A defeated host are (all) the factions that are there.

Yusuf Ali : But there - will be put to flight even a host of confederates.

Shakir : A host of deserters of the allies shall be here put to flight.

Dr. Ghali : A very host of the (allied) parties is routed from these.

Tafsir Jalalayn : A routed (mahzūmun is an adjectival qualification of jundun, ‘host’) host [is all that they are], in other words, they are [nothing but] a despicable host, nothing more — in their denial of you — from among the factions (mina’l-ahzābi, also an adjectival qualification of jundun) in other words, [they are] like those hosts of factions who were in confederation against prophets before you: these were defeated and destroyed, and likewise We shall destroy these [people].

Muhsin Khan : Before them (were many who) belied Messengers, the people of Nuh (Noah); and 'Ad; and Fir'aun (Pharaoh) the man of stakes (with which he used to punish the people),

Sahih International : The people of Noah denied before them, and [the tribe of] 'Aad and Pharaoh, the owner of stakes,

Pickthall : The folk of Noah before them denied (their messenger) and (so did the tribe of) A'ad, and Pharaoh firmly planted,

Yusuf Ali : Before them (were many who) rejected messengers,- the people of Noah, and 'Ad, and Pharaoh, the Lord of Stakes,

Shakir : The people of Nuh and Ad, and Firon, the lord of spikes, rejected (messengers) before them.

Dr. Ghali : The people of Nuh, (Noah) and c?d, and Firaawn, (Pharaoh) owner of the bulwarks, cried lies before them.

Tafsir Jalalayn : Before them the people of Noah denied (the inflection of [the verb kadhdabat, ‘denied’, that is governed by] qawmu, ‘people’, is in the feminine person because of the [implicit] sense), and [so did those of] ‘Ād and Pharaoh, he of the stakes — he used to fix four stakes for the person who incurred his wrath and tie to these [stakes] that person’s hands and feet and then torture him —

Muhsin Khan : And Thamud, and the people of Lout (Lot), and the dwellers of the wood; such were the confederates.

Sahih International : And [the tribe of] Thamud and the people of Lot and the companions of the thicket. Those are the companies.

Pickthall : And (the tribe of) Thamud, and the folk of Lot, and the dwellers in the wood: these were the factions.

Yusuf Ali : And Thamud, and the people of Lut, and the Companions of the Wood; - such were the Confederates.

Shakir : And Samood and the people of Lut and the dwellers of the thicket; these were the parties.

Dr. Ghali : And Thamud, and the people of Lut (Lot) and the companions of the Thicket; those were the (allied) parties.

Tafsir Jalalayn : and Thamūd and the people of Lot and the dwellers in the wood, a small forest, namely, the people of Shu‘ayb, peace be upon him — those were the factions.

038:14

Muhsin Khan : Not one of them but belied the Messengers, therefore My Torment was justified,

Sahih International : Each of them denied the messengers, so My penalty was justified.

Pickthall : Not one of them but did deny the messengers, therefor My doom was justified,

Yusuf Ali : Not one (of them) but rejected the messengers, but My punishment came justly and inevitably (on them).

Shakir : There was none of them but called the messengers liars, so just was My retribution.

Dr. Ghali : Decidedly not one but cried lies to the Messengers, so My punishment came true.

Tafsir Jalalayn : Each one, of the factions, did not but deny the messengers, for when they deny one, they have [in effect] denied them all, since their call [to God] is [the same] one, namely, the call to [affirmation of] His Oneness. So My retribution was justified, [it was] necessary.

038:15

Hassanor Alapa : Go da a phnayawn ankai a rowar sa sowara a satiman a da dn a rk iyan a kapakandod

Muhsin Khan : And these only wait for a single Saihah [shout (i.e. the blowing of the Trumpet by the angel Israfil Sarafil)] there will be no pause or ending thereto [till everything will perish except Allah (the only God full of Majesty, Bounty and Honour)].

Sahih International : And these [disbelievers] await not but one blast [of the Horn]; for it there will be no delay.

Pickthall : These wait for but one Shout, there will be no second thereto.

Yusuf Ali : These (today) only wait for a single mighty Blast, which (when it comes) will brook no delay.

Shakir : Nor do these await aught but a single cry, there being no delay in it.

Dr. Ghali : And in no way are these looking for anything except one Shout; in no way is there any recovery from it.

Tafsir Jalalayn : And these, that is, the disbelievers of Mecca, do not await but a single Cry, namely, the Blast of the Resurrection that will herald chastisement for them, for which there will be no revoking (read fawāq or fuwāq).

Muhsin Khan : They say: "Our Lord! Hasten to us Qittana (i.e. our Record of good and bad deeds so that we see it) before the Day of Reckoning!"

Sahih International : And they say, "Our Lord, hasten for us our share [of the punishment] before the Day of Account"

Pickthall : They say: Our Lord! Hasten on for us our fate before the Day of Reckoning.

Yusuf Ali : They say: "Our Lord! hasten to us our sentence (even) before the Day of Account!"

Shakir : And they say: O our Lord! hasten on to us our portion before the day of reckoning.

Dr. Ghali : And they have said, "Our Lord, hasten (quickly) to us our sentence before the Day of Reckoning."

Tafsir Jalalayn : And they said — after the following [verse] was revealed, As for him who is given his book in his right hand … to the end [of the verse, Q. 69:19] — ‘Our Lord, hasten on for us the record of our deeds before the Day of Reckoning’ — they said this mockingly.

Muhsin Khan : Be patient (O Muhammad SAW) of what they say, and remember Our slave Dawud (David), endued with power. Verily, he was ever oft-returning in all matters and in repentance (toward Allah).

Sahih International : Be patient over what they say and remember Our servant, David, the possessor of strength; indeed, he was one who repeatedly turned back [to Allah ].

Pickthall : Bear with what they say, and remember Our bondman David, lord of might, Lo! he was ever turning in repentance (toward Allah).

Yusuf Ali : Have patience at what they say, and remember our servant David, the man of strength: for he ever turned (to Allah).

Shakir : Bear patiently what they say, and remember Our servant Dawood, the possessor of power; surely he was frequent in returning (to Allah).

Dr. Ghali : (Endure) patiently what they say; and remember Our bondman Dawud (David) (a man) possessing prowess (Literally: hands). Surely he was a constant resorter (to Allah).

Tafsir Jalalayn : God, exalted be He, says: Bear patiently what they say and remember Our servant David, the one of fortitude, that is to say, [the one] of fortitude in worship: he used to fast every other day and keep vigil for half the night, sleep for a third and then keep vigil for the [last] sixth. Indeed he was a penitent [soul], always returning to what pleases God.

038:18

Muhsin Khan : Verily, We made the mountains to glorify Our Praises with him [Dawud (David)] in the 'Ashi (i.e. after the mid-day till sunset) and Ishraq (i.e. after the sunrise till mid-day).

Sahih International : Indeed, We subjected the mountains [to praise] with him, exalting [ Allah ] in the [late] afternoon and [after] sunrise.

Pickthall : Lo! We subdued the hills to hymn the praises (of their Lord) with him at nightfall and sunrise,

Yusuf Ali : It was We that made the hills declare, in unison with him, Our Praises, at eventide and at break of day,

Shakir : Surely We made the mountains to sing the glory (of Allah) in unison with him at the evening and the sunrise,

Dr. Ghali : Surely to him We subjected the mountains with him to extol at nightfall and sunshine.

Tafsir Jalalayn : Truly We disposed the mountains to glorify [God] with him, with the same glorification, at evening, at the time of the night prayer, and at sunrise, at the time of the morning prayer, which is when the sun has fully risen with its light extending everywhere.

Pickthall : And hath the story of the litigants come unto thee? How they climbed the wall into the royal chamber;

Yusuf Ali : Has the Story of the Disputants reached thee? Behold, they climbed over the wall of the private chamber;

Shakir : And has there come to you the story of the litigants, when they made an entry into the private chamber by ascending over the walls?

Dr. Ghali : And has the tiding of the adversaries come up to you? As they scaled the chamber,

Sahih International : When they entered upon David and he was alarmed by them? They said, "Fear not. [We are] two adversaries, one of whom has wronged the other, so judge between us with truth and do not exceed [it] and guide us to the sound path.

Pickthall : How they burst in upon David, and he was afraid of them. They said: Be not afraid! (We are) two litigants, one of whom hath wronged the other, therefor judge aright between us; be not unjust; and show us the fair way.

Yusuf Ali : When they entered the presence of David, and he was terrified of them, they said: "Fear not: we are two disputants, one of whom has wronged the other: Decide now between us with truth, and treat us not with injustice, but guide us to the even Path..

Shakir : When they entered in upon Dawood and he was frightened at them, they said: Fear not; two litigants, of whom one has acted wrongfully towards the other, therefore decide between us with justice, and do not act unjustly, and guide us to the right way.

Dr. Ghali : As they entered upon Dawud; then he was alarmed of them. They said, "Do not fear (anything); two adversaries we are. One of us has been inequitable to the other, (Literally: some of us against some "others") so judge between us with the truth, and do not act unjudiciously, and guide us to the level path.

Tafsir Jalalayn : When they entered upon David, and he was frightened by them. And they said, ‘Do not fear; we are, two disputants (some say that this means ‘two groups’, in order to agree with the plural person [of the verb dakhalū, ‘they entered’]; others say, ‘two individuals’ with the plural person actually denoting these two; al-khasm may refer to a one or more individuals. These two were angels who had come in the form of two disputants, between whom there [was supposed to have] occurred the situation mentioned — [but] only hypothetically — in order to alert David, peace be upon him, to what he had done: he had ninety nine women but desired the woman of a man who had only her and no other. He [David] had married her and consummated the marriage. One of us has infringed upon the [rights of the] other, so judge justly between us and do not transgress, [do not] be unjust, and guide us, direct us, to the right path’, the correct way.

Sahih International : Indeed this, my brother, has ninety-nine ewes, and I have one ewe; so he said, 'Entrust her to me,' and he overpowered me in speech."

Pickthall : Lo! this my brother hath ninety and nine ewes while I had one ewe; and he said: Entrust it to me, and he conquered me in speech.

Yusuf Ali : "This man is my brother: He has nine and ninety ewes, and I have (but) one: Yet he says, 'commit her to my care,' and is (moreover) harsh to me in speech."

Shakir : Surely this is my brother; he has ninety-nine ewes and I have a single ewe; but he said: Make it over to me, and he has prevailed against me in discourse.

Dr. Ghali : Surely this my brother has ninety-nine ewes, and I have one ewe. So he said to me, ‘Let me be her sponsor' and he got the better of me in speech." (Literally: was mightier in the address)

Tafsir Jalalayn : ‘Behold, this brother of mine, in other words, my fellow co-religionist, has ninety-nine ewes — here used to represent the women — while I have a single ewe; yet he said, “Entrust it to me”, in other words, make me in charge of it, and he overcame me in speech’, in other words, in the argument; so the latter conceded charge of it to him.

Muhsin Khan : [Dawud (David)] said (immediately without listening to the opponent): "He has wronged you in demanding your ewe in addition to his ewes. And, verily, many partners oppress one another, except those who believe and do righteous good deeds, and they are few." And Dawud (David) guessed that We have tried him and he sought Forgiveness of his Lord, and he fell down prostrate and turned (to Allah) in repentance.

Sahih International : [David] said, "He has certainly wronged you in demanding your ewe [in addition] to his ewes. And indeed, many associates oppress one another, except for those who believe and do righteous deeds - and few are they." And David became certain that We had tried him, and he asked forgiveness of his Lord and fell down bowing [in prostration] and turned in repentance [to Allah ].

Pickthall : (David) said: He hath wronged thee in demanding thine ewe in addition to his ewes, and lo! many partners oppress one another, save such as believe and do good works, and they are few. And David guessed that We had tried him, and he sought forgiveness of his Lord, and he bowed himself and fell down prostrate and repented.

Yusuf Ali : (David) said: "He has undoubtedly wronged thee in demanding thy (single) ewe to be added to his (flock of) ewes: truly many are the partners (in business) who wrong each other: Not so do those who believe and work deeds of righteousness, and how few are they?"...and David gathered that We had tried him: he asked forgiveness of his Lord, fell down, bowing (in prostration), and turned (to Allah in repentance).

Shakir : He said: Surely he has been unjust to you in demanding your ewe (to add) to his own ewes; and most surely most of the partners act wrongfully towards one another, save those who believe and do good, and very few are they; and Dawood was sure that We had tried him, so he sought the protection of his Lord and he fell down bowing and turned time after time (to Him).

Dr. Ghali : He (Dawud) said, "Indeed he has already done an injustice to you in asking for your ewe (in addition) to his ewes; and surely many intermixes are indeed inequitable one against the other, (Literally: some of them are unfair to some "others") except the ones who have believed and done deeds of righteousness, and how few they are!" And Dawud surmised that We had only tempted (Or: tried) him; so he asked forgiveness of his Lord, and he collapsed bowing down and turned penitent. A prostration is to be performed here.

Tafsir Jalalayn : He said, ‘He has certainly wronged you by asking for your ewe that he may add it to his sheep. And indeed many associates infringe upon [the rights of] one another, except such as believe and perform righteous deeds, but few are they!’ (mā emphasises the ‘fewness’). As the two angels were ascending to the heaven one said to the other, ‘He has certainly passed judgement on himself!’ David was thus alerted [to his deed]. God, exalted be He, says: And David thought, in other words, he became certain, that We had indeed tried him, that We had caused him to fall into a trial, that is, a test, through his love for that woman. So he sought forgiveness of his Lord and fell down bowing, in other words, prostrate, and repented.

Pickthall : So We forgave him that; and lo! he had access to Our presence and a happy journey's end.

Yusuf Ali : So We forgave him this (lapse): he enjoyed, indeed, a Near Approach to Us, and a beautiful place of (Final) Return.

Shakir : Therefore We rectified for him this, and most surely he had a nearness to Us and an excellent resort.

Dr. Ghali : So We forgave him that, and surely he has in Our Providence proximity indeed and a fair resorting.

We have placed you as a successor on earth, so judge you between men in truth (and justice) and follow not your desire for it will mislead you from the Path of Allah. Verily! Those who wander astray from the Path of Allah (shall) have a severe torment, because they forgot the Day of Reckoning.

Sahih International : [We said], "O David, indeed We have made you a successor upon the earth, so judge between the people in truth and do not follow [your own] desire, as it will lead you astray from the way of Allah ." Indeed, those who go astray from the way of Allah will have a severe punishment for having forgotten the Day of Account.

Pickthall : (And it was said unto him): O David! Lo! We have set thee as a viceroy in the earth; therefor judge aright between mankind, and follow not desire that it beguile thee from the way of Allah. Lo! those who wander from the way of Allah have an awful doom, forasmuch as they forgot the Day of Reckoning.

Yusuf Ali : O David! We did indeed make thee a vicegerent on earth: so judge thou between men in truth (and justice): Nor follow thou the lusts (of thy heart), for they will mislead thee from the Path of Allah: for those who wander astray from the Path of Allah, is a Penalty Grievous, for that they forget the Day of Account.

Shakir : o Dawood! surely We have made you a ruler in the land; so judge between men with justice and do not follow desire, lest it should lead you astray from the path of Allah; (as for) those who go astray from the path of Allah, they shall surely have a severe punishment because they forgot the day of reckoning.

Dr. Ghali : O Dawud, surely We have made you a succeeding (Literally: Caliph) (Messenger) in the earth, so judge among mankind with the truth, and do not ever follow prejudice that it may make you err from the way of Allah. Surely the ones who err from the way of Allah will have a strict torment for that they have forgotten the Day of Reckoning.

Tafsir Jalalayn : ‘O David! We have indeed made you a vicegerent on the earth, managing the affairs of people; so judge justly between people and do not follow desire, that is, the desires of the soul, that it then lead you astray from the way of God, that is to say, from the proofs that indicate [the truth of] His Oneness. Truly those who go astray from the way of God, in other words, from belief in God — for them there will be a severe chastisement because of their forgetting the Day of Reckoning’, as a result of their having neglected faith. For had they been certain of [the truth of] the Day of Reckoning, they would have [first] been believers in this world.

Pickthall : And We created not the heaven and the earth and all that is between them in vain. That is the opinion of those who disbelieve. And woe unto those who disbelieve, from the Fire!

Pickthall : Shall We treat those who believe and do good works as those who spread corruption in the earth; or shall We treat the pious as the wicked?

Yusuf Ali : Shall We treat those who believe and work deeds of righteousness, the same as those who do mischief on earth? Shall We treat those who guard against evil, the same as those who turn aside from the right?

Shakir : Shall We treat those who believe and do good like the mischief-makers in the earth? Or shall We make those who guard (against evil) like the wicked?

Dr. Ghali : Or even shall We make the ones who have believed and done deeds of righteousness as the corruptors in the earth, or even shall We make the pious as the constantly impious?

Tafsir Jalalayn : Or shall We treat those who believe and perform righteous deeds like those who cause corruption in the earth; or shall We treat the God-fearing like the profligate? Shakir : When there were brought to him in the evening (horses) still when standing, swift when running--

Dr. Ghali : As there were set (in parade) before him at nightfall light-footed (Literally: standing on three feet) coursers.

Tafsir Jalalayn : When one evening — which is the period after midday — there were displayed before him the prancing steeds (al-sāfināt, ‘horses’, is the plural of sāfina, which denotes [a horse] standing on three legs with the fourth supported on the edge of the hoof, and derives from [the verb] safana, yasfinu sufūnan; al-jiyād is the plural of jawād, which is a ‘racer’; the meaning is that these [horses] are such that when they are halted they stand still and when they run they surpass [others] in speed). One thousand horses were displayed before him after he had performed the midday prayer, for he had wanted to use them in a holy struggle (jihād) against an enemy. Muhsin Khan : Then he said "Bring them (horses) back to me." Then he began to pass his hand over their legs and their necks (till the end of the display).

Sahih International : [He said], "Return them to me," and set about striking [their] legs and necks.

Pickthall : (Then he said): Bring them back to me, and fell to slashing (with his sword their) legs and necks.

Yusuf Ali : "Bring them back to me." then began he to pass his hand over (their) legs and their necks.

Shakir : Bring them back to me; so he began to slash (their) legs and necks.

Dr. Ghali : "Turn them back to me!" Then he took to striking (Or: slashing) their shanks and necks.

Tafsir Jalalayn : Bring them back to me!, that is, the horses that were displayed; and they so brought them back. Then he set about slashing, with his sword, [their] legs (al-sūq is the plural of sāq) and necks, in other words, he slaughtered them and cut off their legs as an offering [of atonement] to God, exalted be He, for having been distracted by them from the prayer. He gave all the meat thereof as voluntary alms and so God compensated him what was better and faster that these [horses], and this was the wind, which blew at his command as he wished.

Muhsin Khan : And, indeed We did try Sulaiman (Solomon) and We placed on his throne Jasadan (a devil, so he lost his kingdom for a while) but he did return (to his throne and kingdom by the Grace of Allah and he did return) to Allah with obedience and in repentance.

Sahih International : And We certainly tried Solomon and placed on his throne a body; then he returned.

Pickthall : And verily We tried Solomon, and set upon his throne a (mere) body. Then did he repent.

Yusuf Ali : And We did try Solomon: We placed on his throne a body (without life); but he did turn (to Us in true devotion):

Shakir : And certainly We tried Sulaiman, and We put on his throne a (mere) body, so he turned (to Allah).

Dr. Ghali : And indeed We already tempted Sulayman, (Solomon) and We cast upon his chair a corporeal (form); thereafter he turned penitent.

Tafsir Jalalayn : And We certainly tried Solomon: We tested him by wresting his kingdom from him, because he had married a woman [solely] out of his desire for her. She used to worship idols in his [own] home without his knowledge. Now, [control of] his kingdom lay in his ring. On one occasion, needing to withdraw [to relieve himself], he took it off and left it with this woman of his, whose name was al-Amīna, as was his custom; but a jinn, [disguised] in the form of Solomon, came to her and seized it from her. And We cast upon his throne a [lifeless] body, which was that [very] jinn, and he was [the one known as] Sakhr — or it was some other [jinn]; he sat upon Solomon’s throne and so [as was the case with Solomon] the birds and other [creatures] devoted themselves to him [in service]. When Solomon came out [of his palace], having seen him [the jinn] upon his throne, he said to the people, ‘I am Solomon [not him]!’ But they did not recognise him. Then he repented — Solomon returned to his kingdom, many days later, after he had managed to acquire the ring. He wore it and sat upon his throne [again].

As for reading the first one in the accusative, this would be on account of the mentioned verb [qāla, ‘he said’]; but it is also said to be on account of its being a verbal noun, the sense being uhiqqu l-haqqa, ‘I establish the truth’; or [it is in the accusative by implication] if the particle for the oath [fa] is removed. It [the first haqq] could also be in the nominative because of its being the subject of a missing predicate, as in fa’l-haqqu minnī, ‘truth [comes] from Me’. It is also said that [the sentence means] fa’l-haqqu qasamī, ‘the truth is [this] oath from Me’, the response to which is the following [la-amla’anna …]) —

Tafsir Jalalayn : And you will assuredly come to know, O disbelievers of Mecca, its tiding, the news of its truth, in [due] time’, that is to say, on the Day of Resurrection (‘ilm, ‘knowing’, is here being used in the sense of ‘urf, ‘experience’; the prefixed lām [in la-ta‘lamunna, ‘you will assuredly know’] is for an implicit oath, in other words [what is meant is] wa’Llāhi [la-ta‘lamunna, ‘By God you will assuredly know’]).
