030:1

Hassanor Alapa : Alif, Lām, Mīm, 1121

Muhsin Khan : Alif-Lam-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings].

Sahih International : Alif, Lam, Meem.

Pickthall : Alif. Lam. Mim.

Yusuf Ali : A. L. M.

Shakir : Alif Lam Mim.

Dr. Ghali : Alif, Lam, Mim (These are the names of letters of the Arabic alphabet, and only Allah knows their meaning here).

Tafsir Jalalayn : Alif lām mīm: God knows best what He means by these [letters].

Tagalog : Alif-Lãm-Mim.

030:2

Hassanor Alapa : Diaag a (ingd) a Rūm 1122 1122

Muhsin Khan : The Romans have been defeated.

Sahih International : The Byzantines have been defeated

Pickthall : The Romans have been defeated

Yusuf Ali : The Roman Empire has been defeated-

Shakir : The Romans are vanquished,

Dr. Ghali : The Romans have been overcome (by the Persians).

Tafsir Jalalayn : The Byzantines — who are among the People of the Scripture — have been vanquished; the Persians vanquished them, and they are not people of a scripture, but worship graven images. The Meccan disbelievers rejoiced in this [defeat of the Byzantines] and said to the Muslims, ‘We shall vanquish you as the Persians vanquished the Byzantines’;

Muhsin Khan : In the nearer land (Syria, Iraq, Jordan, and Palestine), and they, after their defeat, will be victorious.

Sahih International : In the nearest land. But they, after their defeat, will overcome.

Pickthall : In the nearer land, and they, after their defeat will be victorious

Yusuf Ali : In a land close by; but they, (even) after (this) defeat of theirs, will soon be victorious-

Shakir : In a near land, and they, after being vanquished, shall overcome,

Dr. Ghali : In the more adjacent (i.e., more easy to reach; the Levant) (part) of the earth. And even after their being overcome, they will overcome (the others)

Tafsir Jalalayn : in the nearer [part of the] land, that is, in the Byzantine land [that lies] nearest to Persia in Mesopotamia (al-Jazīra). There the two armies met and the Persians were the ones who had begun the invasion. But they, that is the Byzantines, after their vanquishing (ghalabihim: the verbal noun [ghalab] has been annexed to the direct object [hum], in other words, ghalabatu fāris iyyāhum, ‘the Persians’ vanquishing of them’) shall be the victors, over the Persians,

030:4

Hassanor Alapa : Sii ko sold o phipira ragon, rk o Allāh so btad sa onaan ago sa oriyan, na sa alongan oto (a kaphakadaag a Rūm) na khababaya so miamaratiaya

Muhsin Khan : Within three to nine years. The decision of the matter, before and after (these events) is only with Allah, (before the defeat of Romans by the Persians, and after, i.e. the defeat of the Persians by the Romans). And on that Day, the believers (i.e. Muslims) will rejoice (at the victory given by Allah to the Romans against the Persians),

Sahih International : Within three to nine years. To Allah belongs the command before and after. And that day the believers will rejoice

Pickthall : Within ten years - Allah's is the command in the former case and in the latter - and in that day believers will rejoice

Yusuf Ali : Within a few years. With Allah is the Decision, in the past and in the Future: on that Day shall the Believers rejoice-

Shakir : Within a few years. Allah's is the command before and after; and on that day the believers shall rejoice,

Dr. Ghali : Within several years. To Allah belongs the Command ever before and ever after, and upon that day the believers will exult.

Tafsir Jalalayn : in a few years (bid‘, [usually means] between three and nine or ten years). So the two armies met again seven years after this former encounter and the Byzantines defeated the Persians. To God belongs the command before and after, that is, before the defeat of the Byzantines and thereafter, that is to say, the Persian victory at first and the Byzantine victory later were [the result of] God’s command, in other words, His will, and on that day, the day when the Byzantines will be victorious, the believers shall rejoice

030:5

Hassanor Alapa : Sabap ko tabang o Allāh, a thabangan iyan so taw a khabayaan Iyan a Skaniyan so Mabagr a Masalalinggagawn

Muhsin Khan : With the help of Allah, He helps whom He wills, and He is the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.

Sahih International : In the victory of Allah . He gives victory to whom He wills, and He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

Pickthall : In Allah's help to victory. He helpeth to victory whom He will. He is the Mighty, the Merciful.

Yusuf Ali : With the help of Allah. He helps whom He will, and He is exalted in might, most merciful.

Shakir : With the help of Allah; He helps whom He pleases; and He is the Mighty, the Merciful;

Dr. Ghali : In the victory of Allah. He vindicates whomever He decides, and He is The Ever-Mighty, The Ever-Merciful.

Tafsir Jalalayn : in God’s help, to them against the Persians. They [the believers] indeed rejoiced in this, as they came to know of it on the day that it took place, on the day of [the battle of] Badr, when Gabriel came down with this [news] thereon, in addition to their rejoicing in their victory over the idolaters on that [same] day. He helps whomever He will; and He is the Mighty, the Victor, the Merciful, to believers.

030:6

Hassanor Alapa : Kapasadan o Allāh, a di ndoratn o Allāh so kapasadan Iyan, ogaid na so kadaklan ko manga taw na di ran katawan

Muhsin Khan : (It is) a Promise of Allah (i.e. Allah will give victory to the Romans against the Persians), and Allah fails not in His Promise, but most of men know not.

Sahih International : [It is] the promise of Allah . Allah does not fail in His promise, but most of the people do not know.

Pickthall : It is a promise of Allah. Allah faileth not His promise, but most of mankind know not.

Yusuf Ali : (It is) the promise of Allah. Never does Allah depart from His promise: but most men understand not.

Shakir : (This is) Allah's promise! Allah will not fail His promise, but most people do not know.

Dr. Ghali : The promise of Allah! Allah does not fail His promise, but most of mankind do not know.

Tafsir Jalalayn : The promise of God (wa‘da’Llāhi is the verbal noun substituting for the [full] verbal construction; it is actually wa‘adahumu’Llāhu al-nasr, ‘God promised them victory’). God does not fail His promise, of such [help], but most people, namely, the disbelievers of Mecca, are not aware, of His promise to help them [to victory].

030:7

Hassanor Alapa : Aya katawan iran na sa mapayag ko kaoyagoyag ko doniya a siran ko alongan a maori na kalilipatan iran.

Muhsin Khan : They know only the outside appearance of the life of the world (i.e. the matters of their livelihood, like irrigating or sowing or reaping, etc.), and they are heedless of the Hereafter.

Sahih International : They know what is apparent of the worldly life, but they, of the Hereafter, are unaware.

Pickthall : They know only some appearance of the life of the world, and are heedless of the Hereafter.

Yusuf Ali : They know but the outer (things) in the life of this world: but of the End of things they are heedless.

Shakir : They know the outward of this world's life, but of the hereafter they are absolutely heedless.

Dr. Ghali : They know an outward (part) of the present life, (Literally: lowly life, i.e., the life of this world) and of the Hereafter they, (it is) they who are heedless.

Tafsir Jalalayn : They know [merely] an outward aspect of the life of this world, that is to say, its various means of [securing] livelihood, such as commerce, agriculture, construction and cultivation and so on; but they, of the Hereafter, they are oblivious (this repetition of hum, ‘they’, is for emphasis).

Muhsin Khan : Do they not think deeply (in their ownselves) about themselves (how Allah created them from nothing, and similarly He will resurrect them)? Allah has created not the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, except with truth and for an appointed term. And indeed many of mankind deny the Meeting with their Lord. [See Tafsir At-Tabari, Part 21, Page 24].

Sahih International : Do they not contemplate within themselves? Allah has not created the heavens and the earth and what is between them except in truth and for a specified term. And indeed, many of the people, in [the matter of] the meeting with their Lord, are disbelievers.

Pickthall : Have they not pondered upon themselves? Allah created not the heavens and the earth, and that which is between them, save with truth and for a destined end. But truly many of mankind are disbelievers in the meeting with their Lord.

Yusuf Ali : Do they not reflect in their own minds? Not but for just ends and for a term appointed, did Allah create the heavens and the earth, and all between them: yet are there truly many among men who deny the meeting with their Lord (at the Resurrection)!

Shakir : Do they not reflect within themselves: Allah did not create the heavens and the earth and what is between them two but with truth, and (for) an appointed term? And most surely most of the people are deniers of the meeting of their Lord.

Dr. Ghali : And have they not meditated within themselves? In no way did Allah create the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them except with the Truth and for a stated term; and surely many of mankind are indeed disbelievers in the meeting with their Lord.

Tafsir Jalalayn : Have they not contemplated themselves?, so that they might emerge from their oblivion. God did not create the heavens and the earth, and what is between them, except with the truth and an appointed term, for that [creation], at the conclusion of which this [creation] will perish, and after which will be the Resurrection. But indeed many people, that is to say, [such as] the Meccan disbelievers, disbelieve in the encounter with their Lord, that is, they do not believe in resurrection after death.

Muhsin Khan : Do they not travel in the land, and see what was the end of those before them? They were superior to them in strength, and they tilled the earth and populated it in greater numbers than these (pagans) have done, and there came to them their Messengers with clear proofs. Surely, Allah wronged them not, but they used to wrong themselves.

Sahih International : Have they not traveled through the earth and observed how was the end of those before them? They were greater than them in power, and they plowed the earth and built it up more than they have built it up, and their messengers came to them with clear evidences. And Allah would not ever have wronged them, but they were wronging themselves.

Pickthall : Have they not travelled in the land and seen the nature of the consequence for those who were before them? They were stronger than these in power, and they dug the earth and built upon it more than these have built. Messengers of their own came unto them with clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty). Surely Allah wronged them not, but they did wrong themselves.

Yusuf Ali : Do they not travel through the earth, and see what was the end of those before them? They were superior to them in strength: they tilled the soil and populated it in greater numbers than these have done: there came to them their messengers with Clear (Signs). (Which they rejected, to their own destruction): It was not Allah Who wronged them, but they wronged their own souls.

Shakir : Have they not travelled in the earth and seen how was the end of those before them? They were stronger than these in prowess, and dug up the earth, and built on it in greater abundance than these have built on it, and there came to them their messengers with clear arguments; so it was not beseeming for Allah that He should deal with them unjustly, but they dealt unjustly with their own souls.

Dr. Ghali : And have they not traveled in the earth, (and) so looked into how was the end of those even before them? They were more pervasive in power than themselves, and plowed (Literally: stirred up) the earth, and cultivated it more (i.e., populated it and were more eminent) than they themselves have cultivated it; and their Messengers came to them with the supreme evidence (s); so indeed in no way did Allah do (any) injustice to them, but to themselves they used to do injustice.

Tafsir Jalalayn : Have they not travelled in the land and beheld how was the consequence for those before them?, of [past] communities, which was that they were destroyed for denying their messengers. They were more powerful than them — such were ‘Ād and Thamūd — and they effected the land, they tilled it and churned it up to sow crops and cultivate [trees], and developed it more than these, the Meccan disbelievers, have developed it; and their messengers brought them clear signs, manifest proofs, for God would never wrong them, by destroying them without being guilty, but they used to wrong themselves, by denying their messengers.

030:10

Muhsin Khan : Then evil was the end of those who did evil, because they belied the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, Messengers, etc.) of Allah and made mock of them.

Sahih International : Then the end of those who did evil was the worst [consequence] because they denied the signs of Allah and used to ridicule them.

Pickthall : Then evil was the consequence to those who dealt in evil, because they denied the revelations of Allah and made a mock of them.

Yusuf Ali : In the long run evil in the extreme will be the End of those who do evil; for that they rejected the Signs of Allah, and held them up to ridicule.

Shakir : Then evil was the end of those who did evil, because they | rejected the communications of Allah and used to mock them.

Dr. Ghali : Thereafter, the end of the ones who had done odious (deeds) was an utterly odious (end) for that they cried lies to the signs of Allah and used to mock at them.

Tafsir Jalalayn : Then the consequence for those who committed evil was evil (al-sū’ā is the feminine form of al-aswa’, ‘the worst’; [it may be read as] the predicate of kāna if one reads ‘āqibatu, in the nominative; or it is the subject of kāna if read as ‘āqibata, in the accusative; and so what is meant is Hell [in the former reading], or [according to the latter reading] simply their evil actions) because they denied the signs of God, the Qur’ān, and made a mock of them.

030:11

Hassanor Alapa : So Allāh i pagphoon ko kapangadn oriyan iyan na 1126 phakakasowin Iyan oriyan iyan na Ron kano ron phakandod.

Muhsin Khan : Allah (Alone) originates the creation, then He will repeat it, then to Him you will be returned.

Sahih International : Allah begins creation; then He will repeat it; then to Him you will be returned.

Pickthall : Allah produceth creation, then He reproduceth it, then unto Him ye will be returned.

Yusuf Ali : It is Allah Who begins (the process of) creation; then repeats it; then shall ye be brought back to Him.

Shakir : Allah originates the creation, then reproduces it, then to Him you shall be brought back.

Dr. Ghali : Allah begins creation; thereafter He brings it back again; thereafter to Him you will be returned.

Tafsir Jalalayn : God originates creation, in other words, He produces the creation of mankind, then He will reproduce it, that is, the creation of them, after their death, then to Him you shall be returned (read turja‘ūna; or yurja‘ūna, ‘they shall be returned’).

030:12

Hassanor Alapa : Sa sagawii a makatindg so bankit na khawiswisan so 1127 manga baradosa

Muhsin Khan : And on the Day when the Hour will be established, the Mujrimun (disbelievers, sinners, criminals, polytheists, etc.) will be plunged into destruction with deep regrets, sorrows, and despair.

Sahih International : And the Day the Hour appears the criminals will be in despair.

Pickthall : And in the day when the Hour riseth the unrighteous will despair.

Yusuf Ali : On the Day that the Hour will be established, the guilty will be struck dumb with despair.

Shakir : And at the time when the hour shall come the guilty shall be in despair.

Dr. Ghali : And on the Day when the Hour comes up, the criminals will be dumbfounded.

Tafsir Jalalayn : And on the Day when the Hour comes, the sinners will be dumbfounded, the idolaters will be fall into silence, as their [line of] argument can no longer be continued.

030:13

Muhsin Khan : No intercessor will they have from those whom they made equal with Allah (partners i.e. their so-called associate gods), and they will (themselves) reject and deny their partners.

Sahih International : And there will not be for them among their [alleged] partners any intercessors, and they will [then] be disbelievers in their partners.

Pickthall : There will be none to intercede for them of those whom they made equal with Allah. And they will reject their partners (whom they ascribed unto Him).

Yusuf Ali : No intercessor will they have among their "Partners" and they will (themselves) reject their "Partners".

Shakir : And they shall not have any intercessors from among their gods they have joined with Allah, and they shall be deniers of their associate-gods.

Dr. Ghali : And no intercessors will they have among their associates, and they will be disbelievers in their associates.

Tafsir Jalalayn : And none from among those partners of theirs, those whom they ascribed as partners of God, namely, the idols, to intercede for them, shall be intercessors for them and they shall disavow these partners of theirs, in other words, they shall dissociate from them.

030:14

Muhsin Khan : And on the Day when the Hour will be established, that Day shall (all men) be separated (i.e the believers will be separated from the disbelievers).

Sahih International : And the Day the Hour appears - that Day they will become separated.

Pickthall : In the day when the Hour cometh, in that day they will be sundered.

Yusuf Ali : On the Day that the Hour will be established,- that Day shall (all men) be sorted out.

Shakir : And at the time when the hour shall come, at that time they shall become separated one from the other.

Dr. Ghali : And on the Day when the Hour comes up, upon that Day they will part (from each other).

Sahih International : He presents to you an example from yourselves. Do you have among those whom your right hands possess any partners in what We have provided for you so that you are equal therein [and] would fear them as your fear of one another [within a partnership]? Thus do We detail the verses for a people who use reason.

Pickthall : He coineth for you a similitude of yourselves. Have ye, from among those whom your right hands possess, partners in the wealth We have bestowed upon you, equal with you in respect thereof, so that ye fear them as ye fear each other (that ye ascribe unto Us partners out of that which We created)? Thus We display the revelations for people who have sense.

Yusuf Ali : He does propound to you a similitude from your own (experience): do ye have partners among those whom your right hands possess, to share as equals in the wealth We have bestowed on you? Do ye fear them as ye fear each other? Thus do we explain the Signs in detail to a people that understand.

Shakir : He sets forth to you a parable relating to yourselves: Have you among those whom your right hands possess partners in what We have given you for sustenance, so that with respect to it you are alike; you fear them as you fear each other? Thus do We make the communications distinct for a people who understand.

(Literally: yourselves) Thus We expound the signs for a people who consider.

Tafsir Jalalayn : He has struck, He has coined, for you, O idolaters, a similitude, that is [actually drawn], from yourselves, and it is [as follows]: do you have among those whom your right hands own, that is to say, among your servants, any partners, of yourselves, [who may share] in what We have provided for you, of property and so on, so that you, and they, are equal therein, fearing them as you fear your own [folk], [just as you fear] those free men like you? So We detail the signs, [so] We explain them in such detail, for people who understand, [a people who] reflect.

Sahih International : But those who wrong follow their [own] desires without knowledge. Then who can guide one whom Allah has sent astray? And for them there are no helpers.

Pickthall : Nay, but those who do wrong follow their own lusts without knowledge. Who is able to guide him whom Allah hath sent astray? For such there are no helpers.

Yusuf Ali : Nay, the wrong-doers (merely) follow their own lusts, being devoid of knowledge. But who will guide those whom Allah leaves astray? To them there will be no helpers.

Shakir : Nay! those who are unjust follow their low desires without any knowledge; so who can guide him whom Allah makes err? And they shall have no helpers.

Dr. Ghali : No indeed, (but) the ones who do injustice closely follow their (own) prejudices without knowledge. So who will guide the ones whom Allah has led into error? And in no way will they have any vindicators.

Tafsir Jalalayn : Nay, but those who do evil, through idolatry, follow their own desires without any knowledge. So who will guide he whom God has led astray?, that is to say, he will have none to guide him. And they have no helpers, [no] protectors against God’s chastisement.

No change let there be in Khalq-illah (i.e. the Religion of Allah Islamic Monotheism), that is the straight religion, but most of men know not. [Tafsir At-Tabari, Vol 21, Page 41]

Sahih International : So direct your face toward the religion, inclining to truth. [Adhere to] the fitrah of Allah upon which He has created [all] people. No change should there be in the creation of Allah . That is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know.

Pickthall : So set thy purpose (O Muhammad) for religion as a man by nature upright - the nature (framed) of Allah, in which He hath created man. There is no altering (the laws of) Allah's creation. That is the right religion, but most men know not -

Yusuf Ali : So set thou thy face steadily and truly to the Faith: (establish) Allah's handiwork according to the pattern on which He has made mankind: no change (let there be) in the work (wrought) by Allah: that is the standard Religion: but most among mankind understand not.

Shakir : Then set your face upright for religion in the right state-- the nature made by Allah in which He has made men; there is no altering of Allah's creation; that is the right religion, but most people do not know--

Dr. Ghali : So set your face upright to the religion, unswervingly upright; (this religion is) the original disposition from Allah upon which He originated (Literally: constituted) mankind. There is no exchange for the creation of Allah. That is the most upright religion, but most of mankind do not know.

Tafsir Jalalayn : So set your purpose, O Muhammad (s), for religion, as a hanīf, as one inclining to it — in other words, devote your religion, you and whoever follows you, purely to God — a nature given by God, upon which He originated mankind, and this [nature] is His religion: in other words, adhere to it. There is no changing God’s creation, His religion, that is to say, do not change it by becoming idolaters. That is the upright religion, the belief in God’s Oneness, but most people, namely, the Meccan disbelievers, do not know, [anything of] God’s Oneness —

Pickthall : Turning unto Him (only); and be careful of your duty unto Him and establish worship, and be not of those who ascribe partners (unto Him);

Pickthall : And when harm toucheth men they cry unto their Lord, turning to Him in repentance; then, when they have tasted of His mercy, behold! some of them attribute partners to their Lord

Yusuf Ali : When trouble touches men, they cry to their Lord, turning back to Him in repentance: but when He gives them a taste of Mercy as from Himself, behold, some of them pay part-worship to other god's besides their Lord,-

Shakir : And when harm afflicts men, they call upon their Lord, turning to Him, then when He makes them taste of mercy from Him, lo! some of them begin to associate (others) with their Lord,

Dr. Ghali : And when adversity touches mankind, they invoke their Lord, turning penitent to Him. Thereafter when He makes them taste mercy from Him, only then do a group of them associate (others) with their Lord.

Pickthall : And when We cause mankind to taste of mercy they rejoice therein; but if an evil thing befall them as the consequence of their own deeds, lo! they are in despair!

Yusuf Ali : When We give men a taste of Mercy, they exult thereat: and when some evil afflicts them because of what their (own) hands have sent forth, behold, they are in despair!

Shakir : And when We make people taste of mercy they rejoice in it, and if an evil befall them for what their hands have already wrought, lo! they are in despair.

Dr. Ghali : And when We make mankind to taste a mercy, they exult with it; and in case odious (time) afflicts them for what their hands had forwarded, only then do they despond.

Tafsir Jalalayn : And when We let people, that is, [people such as] the disbelievers of Mecca and others, taste some mercy, some grace, they exult in it, an exultation of arrogance. But if some evil, some hardship, befalls them for what their own hands have sent ahead, behold! they despair, of mercy. Pickthall : See they not that Allah enlargeth the provision for whom He will, and straiteneth (it for whom He will). Lo! herein indeed are portents for folk who believe.

Yusuf Ali : See they not that Allah enlarges the provision and restricts it, to whomsoever He pleases? Verily in that are Signs for those who believe.

Shakir : Do they not see that Allah makes ample provision for whom He pleases, or straitens? Most surely there are signs in this for a people who believe.

Dr. Ghali : And have they not seen that Allah outspreads the provision to whomever He decides and He estimates it? Surely in that are indeed signs for a people who believe.

Tafsir Jalalayn : Have they not seen, [have they not] realised, that God extends, He makes abundant, His provision to whomever He will, as a test, and straitens?, and He restricts it for whomever He will, as a trial? Surely in that there are signs for people who believe, in them.

Yusuf Ali : So give what is due to kindred, the needy, and the wayfarer. That is best for those who seek the Countenance, of Allah, and it is they who will prosper.

Shakir : Then give to the near of kin his due, and to the needy and the wayfarer; this is best for those who desire Allah's pleasure, and these it is who are successful.

Dr. Ghali : So bring to a near kinsman his true (right), and to the indigent, and the wayfarer; that is most charitable (i.e., best) for the ones who are willing to (seek) the Face of Allah, and those are they (who are) the prosperers.

Sahih International : And whatever you give for interest to increase within the wealth of people will not increase with Allah . But what you give in zakah, desiring the countenance of Allah - those are the multipliers.

Pickthall : That which ye give in usury in order that it may increase on (other) people's property hath no increase with Allah; but that which ye give in charity, seeking Allah's Countenance, hath increase manifold.

Yusuf Ali : That which ye lay out for increase through the property of (other) people, will have no increase with Allah: but that which ye lay out for charity, seeking the Countenance of Allah, (will increase): it is these who will get a recompense multiplied.

Shakir : And whatever you lay out as usury, so that it may increase in the property of men, it shall not increase with Allah; and whatever you give in charity, desiring Allah's pleasure-- it is these (persons) that shall get manifold.

Dr. Ghali : And whatever you bring in riba (Usury and other forms of unlawful gain) that it may augment upon (other) persons' (Usury and other forms of unlawful gain) wealth, then it does not augment in the Providence of Allah; and whatever you bring in Zakat, (Poor-dues) willing to seek the Face of Allah, then those are they who will get (recompense) manifold.

Shakir : Corruption has appeared in the land and the sea on account of what the hands of men have wrought, that He may make them taste a part of that which they have done, so that they may return.

Dr. Ghali : Corruption has appeared in the land and the sea for what mankind's hands have earned, that He may make them taste some (part) of that which they have done, that possibly they would return.

Tafsir Jalalayn : Corruption has appeared on land, in the wastelands, because of the rain being withheld and the vegetation diminishing, and on sea, in lands near rivers because of their waters diminishing, because of what people’s hands have perpetrated, of acts of disobedience, that He may make them taste (li-yudhīqahum; or [may be read] li-nudhīqahum, ‘that We may make them taste’) something of what they have done, that is, the punishment for it, that perhaps they may repent.

Yusuf Ali : We did indeed send, before thee, messengers to their (respective) peoples, and they came to them with Clear Signs: then, to those who transgressed, We meted out Retribution: and it was due from Us to aid those who believed.

Shakir : And certainly We sent before you messengers to their people, so they came to them with clear arguments, then We gave the punishment to those who were guilty; and helping the believers is ever incumbent on Us.

Dr. Ghali : Allah is He Who sends the winds. So they stir up clouds, then He outspreads them in the heaven how He decides and makes them into lumps. Then you see rain-drops coming (Literally: going out) out of the midst of them. So when He makes it alight on whomever of His bondmen He decides; only then they are glad at the tidings.

Tafsir Jalalayn : God is the One Who unleashes the winds which then raise, stir up, clouds, and He then spreads them across the heaven as He will, in small or large quantities, and He forms them into fragments (read kisafan or kisfan: ‘scattered pieces’) then you see the rain issuing out of them, that is, out of the midst of them. Sahih International : But if We should send a [bad] wind and they saw [their crops] turned yellow, they would remain thereafter disbelievers.

Pickthall : And if We sent a wind and they beheld it yellow, they verily would still continue in their disbelief.

Yusuf Ali : And if We (but) send a Wind from which they see (their tilth) turn yellow,- behold, they become, thereafter, Ungrateful (Unbelievers)!

Shakir : And if We send a wind and they see it to be yellow, they would after that certainly continue to disbelieve

Dr. Ghali : And indeed in case We send a wind and so they see it (turning) yellow, indeed they would even after that linger on disbelieving.

Sahih International : And the Day the Hour appears the criminals will swear they had remained but an hour. Thus they were deluded.

Pickthall : And on the day when the Hour riseth the guilty will vow that they did tarry but an hour - thus were they ever deceived.

Yusuf Ali : On the Day that the Hour (of Reckoning) will be established, the transgressors will swear that they tarried not but an hour: thus were they used to being deluded!

Shakir : And at the time when the hour shall come, the guilty shall swear (that) they did not tarry but an hour; thus are they ever turned away.

Dr. Ghali : And on the Day when the Hour comes upright, the criminals will swear (that) in no way did they linger except (Literally: other than) for an hour; thus they were diverged (from truth) into falsehood.

Tafsir Jalalayn : And on the Day when the Hour comes the guilty, the disbelievers, shall swear that they had not remained more than an hour, in the grave. God, exalted be He, says: That is how they use to be deceived, [how] they used to be turned away from the truth — the Resurrection — similar to the way in which they have [now] been turned away from the real truth about how long they had remained.

Sahih International : But those who were given knowledge and faith will say, "You remained the extent of Allah 's decree until the Day of Resurrection, and this is the Day of Resurrection, but you did not used to know."

Pickthall : But those to whom knowledge and faith are given will say: The truth is, ye have tarried, by Allah's decree, until the Day of Resurrection. This is the Day of Resurrection, but ye used not to know.

Yusuf Ali : But those endued with knowledge and faith will say: "Indeed ye did tarry, within Allah's Decree, to the Day of Resurrection, and this is the Day of Resurrection: but ye - ye were not aware!"

Shakir : And those who are given knowledge and faith will say: Certainly you tarried according to the ordinance of Allah till the day of resurrection, so this is the day of resurrection, but you did not know.

Dr. Ghali : And the ones who have been brought knowledge and belief will say, "Indeed you have already lingered in the Book of Allah to the Day of the Rising up. So this is the Day of the Rising up, but you did not know (Literally: you used not to know).

Tafsir Jalalayn : But those who have been given knowledge and faith, of angels and others, shall say, ‘You have remained according to God’s decree, in accordance with what He had decreed [for you] in His prior knowledge, until the Day of Resurrection. This is the Day of Resurrection, which you rejected, but you did not know’, that it would come to pass.

Sahih International : So that Day, their excuse will not benefit those who wronged, nor will they be asked to appease [ Allah ].

Pickthall : In that day their excuses will not profit those who did injustice, nor will they be allowed to make amends.

Yusuf Ali : So on that Day no excuse of theirs will avail the transgressors, nor will they be invited (then) to seek grace (by repentance).

Shakir : But on that day their excuse shall not profit those who were unjust, nor shall they be regarded with goodwill.

Dr. Ghali : Then, upon that Day their ready excuse (s) will not profit the ones who did injustice, nor will they (be allowed to) make amends.

Tafsir Jalalayn : So on that day their excuses, for denying it, will not profit (read lā yanfa‘u or lā tanfa‘u) the evildoers, nor will they be asked to make amends (yusta‘tabūna means ‘they will [not] be asked for al-‘utbā’, which denotes ‘a return to that which pleases God’).

But if you (O Muhammad SAW) bring to them any sign or proof, (as an evidence for the truth of your Prophethood), the disbelievers are sure to say (to the believers): "You follow nothing but falsehood, and magic."

Sahih International : And We have certainly presented to the people in this Qur'an from every [kind of] example. But, [O Muhammad], if you should bring them a sign, the disbelievers will surely say, "You [believers] are but falsifiers."

Pickthall : Verily We have coined for mankind in this Qur'an all kinds of similitudes; and indeed if thou camest unto them with a miracle, those who disbelieve would verily exclaim: Ye are but tricksters!

Yusuf Ali : verily We have propounded for men, in this Qur'an every kind of Parable: But if thou bring to them any Sign, the Unbelievers are sure to say, "Ye do nothing but talk vanities."

Shakir : And certainly We have set forth for men every kind of example in this Quran; and if you should bring them a communication, those who disbelieve would certainly say: You are naught but false claimants.

Dr. Ghali : And indeed We have already struck for mankind in this Qur'an every (manner) of similitude; and indeed in case you come to them with a sign, indeed the ones who have disbelieved will definitely say, "Decidedly you are nothing except wrong-doers." (Literally: The doers of futile or worthless deeds).

Tafsir Jalalayn : And verily We have struck, We have coined, for mankind in this Qur’ān every [kind of] similitude, as a way of cautioning them. And if (wa-la-in, the lām is for oaths) you, O Muhammad (s), were to bring them a [miraculous] sign, such as the staff or the hand in the case of Moses, those who disbelieve, from among them, will certainly say (la-yaqūlanna: the indicative nūn has been omitted because of the other nūn coming after it, and likewise the wāw [replaced by the damma in lu], because of two unvocalised consonants coming together and it indicates the plural person), ‘You — in other words, Muhammad (s) and his Companions — are nothing but followers of falsehood’.

Pickthall : Thus doth Allah seal the hearts of those who know not.

Yusuf Ali : Thus does Allah seal up the hearts of those who understand not.

Shakir : Thus does Allah set a seal on the hearts of those who do not know.

Dr. Ghali : Thus Allah stamps (i.e., impresses or sets a seal) upon the hearts of those who do not know.

Tafsir Jalalayn : Thus does God seal the hearts of those who do not know, [anything of] God’s Oneness, in the same way that He has sealed the hearts of these [aforementioned individuals].

Sahih International : So be patient. Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth. And let them not disquiet you who are not certain [in faith].

Pickthall : So have patience (O Muhammad)! Allah's promise is the very truth, and let not those who have no certainty make thee impatient.

Yusuf Ali : So patiently persevere: for verily the promise of Allah is true: nor let those shake thy firmness, who have (themselves) no certainty of faith.

Shakir : Therefore be patient; surely the promise of Allah is true and let not those who have no certainty hold you in light estimation.

Dr. Ghali : So (endure) patiently; surely the promise of Allah is true; and do not let the ones who have no certitude induce you to levity.

Tafsir Jalalayn : So be patient. Surely God’s promise, to give you victory over them, is true. And do not let them cause you to be inconstant, those who are uncertain, of the Resurrection, in other words, do not let them cause you to succumb to inconstancy and frivolity by abandoning patience, that is to say, do not abandon it.
