Muhsin Khan : Blessed be He Who sent down the criterion (of right and wrong, i.e. this Quran) to His slave (Muhammad SAW) that he may be a warner to the 'Alamin (mankind and jinns).

Sahih International : Blessed is He who sent down the Criterion upon His Servant that he may be to the worlds a warner -

Pickthall : Blessed is He Who hath revealed unto His slave the Criterion (of right and wrong), that he may be a warner to the peoples.

Yusuf Ali : Blessed is He who sent down the criterion to His servant, that it may be an admonition to all creatures;-

Shakir : Blessed is He Who sent down the Furqan upon His servant that he may be a warner to the nations;

Dr. Ghali : Supremely Blessed is He Who has sent down the all-distinctive Criterion upon His bondman that he may be a warner to the worlds.,

Tafsir Jalalayn : Blessed, exalted, is He Who revealed the Criterion (al-furqān), the Qur’ān — called thus [al-furqān] because it has discriminated (faraqa) between truth and falsehood — to His servant, Muhammad (s), that he may be to all the worlds, [to] mankind and the jinn, but not the angels, a warner, a threatening of God’s chastisement.

Muhsin Khan : He to Whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and Who has begotten no son (children or offspring) and for Whom there is no partner in the dominion. He has created everything, and has measured it exactly according to its due measurements.

Sahih International : He to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and who has not taken a son and has not had a partner in dominion and has created each thing and determined it with [precise] determination.

Pickthall : He unto Whom belongeth the Sovereignty of the heavens and the earth, He hath chosen no son nor hath He any partner in the Sovereignty. He hath created everything and hath meted out for it a measure.

Yusuf Ali : He to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth: no son has He begotten, nor has He a partner in His dominion: it is He who created all things, and ordered them in due proportions.

Shakir : He, Whose is the kingdom of the heavens and the earth, and Who did not take to Himself a son, and Who has no associate in the kingdom, and Who created everything, then ordained for it a measure.

Dr. Ghali : To Whom belongs the Kingdom of the heavens and the earth, and He has not taken to Him a child, and He has no associate in the Kingdom; and He created everything, so He has determined it an (exact) determination.

Tafsir Jalalayn : He to Whom belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth, and Who has not taken a son, nor has He any partner in sovereignty; and He created everything, which was meant to be created, and then determined it in a precise measure, He fashioned it in a balanced form.

Muhsin Khan : Yet they have taken besides Him other aliha (gods) that created nothing but are themselves created, and possess neither hurt nor benefit for themselves, and possess no power (of causing) death, nor (of giving) life, nor of raising the dead.

Sahih International : But they have taken besides Him gods which create nothing, while they are created, and possess not for themselves any harm or benefit and possess not [power to cause] death or life or resurrection.

Pickthall : Yet they choose beside Him other gods who create naught but are themselves created, and possess not hurt nor profit for themselves, and possess not death nor life, nor power to raise the dead.

Yusuf Ali : Yet have they taken, besides him, gods that can create nothing but are themselves created; that have no control of hurt or good to themselves; nor can they control death nor life nor resurrection.

Shakir : And they have taken besides Him gods, who do not create anything while they are themselves created, and they control not for themselves any harm or profit, and they control not death nor life, nor raising (the dead) to life.

Dr. Ghali : And they have taken to themselves gods, apart from Him, that create nothing and themselves are created and possess for themselves, neither harm nor profit; neither do they possess death, nor life, nor uprising. (i.e., resurrection).

Tafsir Jalalayn : Yet they, the disbelievers, have taken besides Him, that is, [besides] God, in other words, other than Him, gods, from among the idols, who create nothing but have themselves been created, and who possess no harm for themselves, that is, [the power] to repel it, nor any benefit, that is, [the power] to attract it, nor do they possess [any power over] death or life, that is, [nor do they have the power] to make a person die or to give him life, or resurrection, that is, [nor do they have power] to raise the dead.

Muhsin Khan : Those who disbelieve say: "This (the Quran) is nothing but a lie that he (Muhammad SAW) has invented, and others have helped him at it, so that they have produced an unjust wrong (thing) and a lie."

Sahih International : And those who disbelieve say, "This [Qur'an] is not except a falsehood he invented, and another people assisted him in it." But they have committed an injustice and a lie.

Pickthall : Those who disbelieve say: This is naught but a lie that he hath invented, and other folk have helped him with it, so that they have produced a slander and a lie.

Yusuf Ali : But the misbelievers say: "Naught is this but a lie which he has forged, and others have helped him at it." In truth it is they who have put forward an iniquity and a falsehood.

Shakir : And those who disbelieve say: This is nothing but a lie which he has forged, and other people have helped him at it; so indeed they have done injustice and (uttered) a falsehood.

Dr. Ghali : And the ones who have disbelieved have said, "Decidedly this is nothing except a falsehood he has fabricated, and other people have helped him to it." So they have already come with injustice and forgery (i.e., they have committed injustice and forgery).

Tafsir Jalalayn : And those who disbelieve say, ‘This, Qur’ān, is nothing but a calumny, a lie, that he, Muhammad (s), has invented, and other folk have helped him with it’, who [according to the disbelievers] were from among the People of the Scripture. God, exalted be He, says: Verily thus they have committed wrong and [spoken] falsehood, [they have come with] disbelief and mendacity.

Pickthall : And they say: Fables of the men of old which he hath had written down so that they are dictated to him morn and evening.

Yusuf Ali : And they say: "Tales of the ancients, which he has caused to be written: and they are dictated before him morning and evening."

Shakir : And they say: The stories of the ancients-- he has got them written-- so these are read out to him morning and evening.

Dr. Ghali : And they have said, "Myths of the earliest (people) that he has had written down so that they are dictated to him before sunrise and at nightfall."

Tafsir Jalalayn : And they say, that it [the Qur’ān] is also, ‘Fables, their lies (asātir is the plural of ustūra) of the ancients which he has had written down, that he has had someone from among those people copy it down for him, so that they are read to him, for him to memorise, morning and evening’. God, exalted be He, responds to them saying:

Sahih International : Say, [O Muhammad], "It has been revealed by He who knows [every] secret within the heavens and the earth. Indeed, He is ever Forgiving and Merciful."

Pickthall : Say (unto them, O Muhammad): He who knoweth the secret of the heavens and the earth hath revealed it. Lo! He ever is Forgiving, Merciful.

Yusuf Ali : Say: "The (Qur'an) was sent down by Him who knows the mystery (that is) in the heavens and the earth: verily He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."

Shakir : Say: He has revealed it Who knows the secret in the heavens and the earth; surely He is ever Forgiving, Merciful.

Dr. Ghali : Say, "He has sent it down, (He) who knows the secret in the heavens and the earth; surely He has been Ever-Forgiving, Ever-Merciful."

Tafsir Jalalayn : Say: ‘It has been revealed by Him Who knows the secret, the Unseen, of the heavens and the earth. Truly He is ever Forgiving, of believers, Merciful’, to them.

Sahih International : And they say, "What is this messenger that eats food and walks in the markets? Why was there not sent down to him an angel so he would be with him a warner?

Pickthall : And they say: What aileth this messenger (of Allah) that he eateth food and walketh in the markets? Why is not an angel sent down unto him, to be a warner with him.

Yusuf Ali : And they say: "What sort of a messenger is this, who eats food, and walks through the streets? Why has not an angel been sent down to him to give admonition with him?

Shakir : And they say: What is the matter with this Messenger that he eats food and goes about in the markets; why has not an angel been sent down to him, so that he should have been a warner with him?

Dr. Ghali : And they have said, "What is it with this Messenger that he eats food and walks in the markets? Had there not been an Angel sent down to him, so that he would be a warner with him!

Tafsir Jalalayn : And they also say, ‘What is it with this Messenger that he eats food and walks about in the marketplaces? Why has an angel not been sent down to him so as to be a warner along with him?, and confirm his truthfulness.

Sahih International : Or [why is not] a treasure presented to him [from heaven], or does he [not] have a garden from which he eats?" And the wrongdoers say, "You follow not but a man affected by magic."

Pickthall : Or (why is not) treasure thrown down unto him, or why hath he not a paradise from whence to eat? And the evil-doers say: Ye are but following a man bewitched.

Yusuf Ali : "Or (Why) has not a treasure been bestowed on him, or why has he (not) a garden for enjoyment?" The wicked say: "Ye follow none other than a man bewitched."

Shakir : Or (why is not) a treasure sent down to him, or he is made to have a garden from which he should eat? And the unjust say: You do not follow any but a man deprived of reason.

Dr. Ghali : Or (had there been) a hoarding (i.e., a treasure) cast down to him, or (had) there been to him a garden to eat of?" And the unjust (people) have said, "Decidedly you are only closely following a man bewitched!"

Tafsir Jalalayn : Or a treasure thrown down to him, from the heaven, for him to spend from so as not to be in need of walking through the marketplaces in order to earn his livelihood. Or he has a garden, an orchard, for him to eat from?’, that is, [to eat] from its fruits and satisfy himself therewith (a variant reading [for ya’kulu, ‘for him to eat’] has na’kulu, ‘for us to eat’) and thus possess because of that [garden] an advantage over us. The wrongdoers, namely, the disbelievers, say, to the believers: ‘You are just following a man bewitched!’, one duped, his mind overcome. God, exalted be He, says:

Sahih International : Look how they strike for you comparisons; but they have strayed, so they cannot [find] a way.

Pickthall : See how they coin similitudes for thee, so that they are all astray and cannot find a road!

Yusuf Ali : See what kinds of comparisons they make for thee! But they have gone astray, and never a way will they be able to find!

Shakir : See what likenesses do they apply to you, so they have gone astray, therefore they shall not be able to find a way.

Dr. Ghali : Look how they strike similitudes for you, so they have erred away; then they are unable to (find) a way!

Tafsir Jalalayn : See how they strike similitudes for you, of [the fact that the Prophet is] a person bewitched and one in need of something to expend [from] and of an angel to help him carry out the task [of delivering the Message], so that they go astray, thereby from guidance, and are unable to find a way, a means thereto [to guidance].

Sahih International : Blessed is He who, if He willed, could have made for you [something] better than that - gardens beneath which rivers flow - and could make for you palaces.

Pickthall : Blessed is He Who, if He will, will assign thee better than (all) that - Gardens underneath which rivers flow - and will assign thee mansions.

Yusuf Ali : Blessed is He who, if that were His will, could give thee better (things) than those,- Gardens beneath which rivers flow; and He could give thee palaces (secure to dwell in).

Shakir : Blessed is He Who, if He please, will give you what is better than this, gardens beneath which rivers flow, and He will give you palaces.

Dr. Ghali : Supremely Blessed is He Who, in case He decides, will make for you a more charitable (i.e., better) (thing) than that- gardens from beneath which rivers run-and He will make for you palaces.

Tafsir Jalalayn : Blessed is He, abundant is the good of God, Who, if He will, will give you better than that, treasure or orchard which they mentioned — gardens underneath which rivers flow, in this world, for He has already willed to give him such things in the Hereafter, and will give (read apocopated form wa-yaj‘al) you palaces, as well (a variant reading [of the apocopated yaj‘al] is yaj‘alu, ‘He will give’, beginning a new sentence).

Sahih International : But they have denied the Hour, and We have prepared for those who deny the Hour a Blaze.

Pickthall : Nay, but they deny (the coming of) the Hour, and for those who deny (the coming of) the Hour We have prepared a flame.

Yusuf Ali : Nay they deny the hour (of the judgment to come): but We have prepared a blazing fire for such as deny the hour:

Shakir : But they reject the hour, and We have prepared a burning fire for him who rejects the hour.

Dr. Ghali : Hour; and We have readied for him who cries lies to the Hour a Blaze.

Tafsir Jalalayn : Nay, but they deny the [coming of the] Hour, the Resurrection, and We have prepared for those who deny the Hour a blaze (sa‘īr), a fire that has been set ablaze (musa‘‘ara), in other words, an intense [fire].

Yusuf Ali : When it sees them from a place fAr off, they will hear its fury and its ranging sigh.

Shakir : When it shall come into their sight from a distant place, they shall hear its vehement raging and roaring.

Dr. Ghali : When it sees them from a far place, they will hear the (furious) raging and the groaning it has.

Tafsir Jalalayn : When it sees them from a distant place, they will hear it raging, boiling like an enraged person when his heart boils with anger, and roaring, [producing] a powerful noise. Alternatively, what is meant by their ‘hearing it raging’ is their vision of it and awareness of it.

Tafsir Jalalayn : And when they are flung into a narrow place thereof (read dayyiqan or dayqan, ‘narrow’, such that it constricts them; minhā, ‘thereof’, is a circumstantial qualifier referring to makānan, ‘place’, because it is actually an adjectival qualification of it) bound together, shackled, with their hands bound to their necks in chains (the use of the intensive form muqarranīna [as opposed to muqranīna] is meant to indicate a large number), they will at that point pray for [their own] annihilation, and it will be said to them:

Tagalog : At kapag sila ay itinapon doon sa matinding sikip ng Impiyerno – at pinagsama sa pagkakadena ang kanilang mga kamay at mga leeg – ay aasamin nila sa kanilang mga sarili na sana ay mamatay na sila upang makaligtas sa ganoong kahirapan.

Sahih International : [They will be told], "Do not cry this Day for one destruction but cry for much destruction."

Pickthall : Pray not that day for one destruction, but pray for many destructions!

Yusuf Ali : "This day plead not for a single destruction: plead for destruction oft-repeated!"

Shakir : Call not this day for one destruction, but call for destructions many.

Pickthall : Say: Is that (doom) better or the Garden of Immortality which is promised unto those who ward off (evil)? It will be their reward and journey's end.

Yusuf Ali : Say: "Is that best, or the eternal garden, promised to the righteous? for them, that is a reward as well as a goal (of attainment).

Shakir : Say: Is this better or the abiding garden which those who guard (against evil) are promised? That shall be a reward and a resort for them.

Dr. Ghali : (rather) the Garden of Eternity that is promised to the pious? It is for them a recompense and a Destiny."

Tafsir Jalalayn : Say: ‘Is that, which is mentioned of the threat of chastisement and the description of the Fire, better, or the Garden of Immortality which has been promised to the God-fearing, which will be, in God’s knowledge, exalted be He, their requital, [their] reward, and journey’s end?’, [their] place of return.

Shakir : They shall have therein what they desire abiding (in it); it is a promise which it is proper to be prayed for from your Lord.

Dr. Ghali : promise upon your Lord, of Him to be asked (by His righteous bondmen).

Tafsir Jalalayn : In it they shall have what they wish, abiding [therein] — an irrevocable state — it, the promise to them of what is mentioned, is a promise binding on your Lord, [a promise] much besought, requested by those who have been promised it [as is clear from the following]: Our Lord, grant us what You have promised us through Your messengers [Q. 3:194], or requested on their behalf by the angels [who say]: Our Lord, and admit them into the Gardens of Eden which You have promised them [Q. 40:8].

Dr. Ghali : Indeed he readily made me err away from the Remembrance after it had come to me." And Ash-Shaytan (i.e., dwelling habitation) has been constantly abandoning man.

Tafsir Jalalayn : Verily he has led me astray from the Remembrance, namely, the Qur’ān, after it had come to me, by causing me to recant my belief in it. God, exalted be He, says: And Satan is ever a deserter of, the disbelieving, man’, abandoning him and dissociating from him in [times of] tribulation.

Sahih International : And the Messenger has said, "O my Lord, indeed my people have taken this Qur'an as [a thing] abandoned."

Pickthall : And the messenger saith: O my Lord! Lo! mine own folk make this Qur'an of no account.

Yusuf Ali : Then the Messenger will say: "O my Lord! Truly my people took this Qur'an for just foolish nonsense."

Shakir : And the Messenger cried out: O my Lord! surely my people have treated this Quran as a forsaken thing.

Dr. Ghali : And the Messenger has said, "O Lord! Surely my people have taken to themselves this Qur'an as a thing to be forsaken."

Tafsir Jalalayn : And the Messenger, Muhammad (s), says, ‘O my Lord, lo! my people, the [tribe of] Quraysh, consider this Qur’ān as something to be shunned’, to be disregarded.

Sahih International : And thus have We made for every prophet an enemy from among the criminals. But sufficient is your Lord as a guide and a helper.

Pickthall : Even so have We appointed unto every prophet an opponent from among the guilty; but Allah sufficeth for a Guide and Helper.

Yusuf Ali : Thus have We made for every prophet an enemy among the sinners: but enough is thy Lord to guide and to help.

Shakir : And thus have We made for every prophet an enemy from among the sinners and sufficient is your Lord as a Guide and a Helper.

Dr. Ghali : And thus We have made to every Prophet an enemy among the criminals; and your Lord suffices as a Guide and an Ever-Vindicator.

Tafsir Jalalayn : God, exalted be He, says: So, just as We have appointed for you enemies from among the idolaters of your people, We have appointed to every prophet, before you, an enemy from among the guilty, the idolaters — so be steadfast as they were; but your Lord suffices as a Guide, for you, and a Helper, to bring you victory over your enemies.

Sahih International : And those who disbelieve say, "Why was the Qur'an not revealed to him all at once?" Thus [it is] that We may strengthen thereby your heart. And We have spaced it distinctly.

Pickthall : And those who disbelieve say: Why is the Qur'an not revealed unto him all at once? (It is revealed) thus that We may strengthen thy heart therewith; and We have arranged it in right order.

Yusuf Ali : Those who reject Faith say: "Why is not the Qur'an revealed to him all at once? Thus (is it revealed), that We may strengthen thy heart thereby, and We have rehearsed it to thee in slow, well-arranged stages, gradually.

Shakir : And those who disbelieve say: Why has not the Quran been revealed to him all at once? Thus, that We may strengthen your heart by it and We have arranged it well in arranging.

Dr. Ghali : And the ones who have disbelieved have said, "If only the Qur'an had been sent down upon him as one complete whole." Thus, that We may make firm your heart-sight thereby, and We have recited it in a (distinct) recitation.

Tafsir Jalalayn : And those who disbelieve say, ‘Why has the Qur’ān not been revealed to him all at once?’, as the Torah, the Gospel and the Book of Psalms [were]. God, exalted be He, says: We have revealed it, thus, in parts, [it is], that We may strengthen your inner-heart with it, and We have arranged it in a specific order, that is to say, We produce it in stages one part after another, gradually and deliberately, in order to facilitate its comprehension and its memorisation.

Pickthall : And they bring thee no similitude but We bring thee the Truth (as against it), and better (than their similitude) as argument.

Yusuf Ali : And no question do they bring to thee but We reveal to thee the truth and the best explanation (thereof).

Shakir : And they shall not bring to you any argument, but We have brought to you (one) with truth and best in significance.

Dr. Ghali : And they do not come up to you with any similitude, except that We come to you with the Truth and a fairer explanation.

Tafsir Jalalayn : And they do not bring you any similitude, to invalidate your mission, but that We bring you the truth, that refutes it, and [what is] better [as] exposition, explanation.

Pickthall : Those who will be gathered on their faces unto hell: such are worse in plight and further from the right road.

Yusuf Ali : Those who will be gathered to Hell (prone) on their faces,- they will be in an evil plight, and, as to Path, most astray.

Shakir : (As for) those who shall be gathered upon their faces to hell, they are in a worse plight and straying farther away from the path.

Dr. Ghali : The ones who will be mustered to Hell upon their faces, those will be in an eviler place and will have (erred) further from the way.

Tafsir Jalalayn : They are, those who will be gathered on their faces, that is, [those who] will be driven [as cattle], toward Hell: they will be in the worst place, namely, Hell, and furthest astray from the way, [they will be] on a path of error worse than that of others; and this [path] is their disbelief.

Yusuf Ali : (Before this,) We sent Moses The Book, and appointed his brother Aaron with him as minister;

Shakir : And certainly We gave Musa the Book and We appointed with him his brother Haroun an aider.

Dr. Ghali : And indeed We already brought Musa (Moses) the Book, and We made with him his brother Harun (Aaron) as minister.

Dr. Ghali : And the people of Nuh, (Noah) as soon as they cried lies to the Messengers, We drowned them, and We made them to be a sign to mankind; and We have readied for the unjust a painful torment.

Tafsir Jalalayn : And, mention, the people of Noah, when they denied the messengers, in denying Noah — it is as though he were many messengers given the length of time he remained among them; or [it is thus expressed in the plural] because to deny him is [equivalent] to denying all the other messengers, for they all came with the same [Message concerning] affirmation of God’s Oneness — We drowned them (this is the response to lammā, ‘when’) and made them a sign, a lesson, for mankind, thereafter, and We have prepared, in the Hereafter, for the evildoers, the disbelievers, a painful chastisement, in addition to what [chastisement] may befall them in this world.

For had He, your Lord, willed, He would have made it still, ever-present so that it does not disappear with the rising of the sun. Then We made the sun an indicator of it, [of] the shadow; were it not for the sun the shadow would not have been known.
