Sahih International : Allah , to whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And woe to the disbelievers from a severe punishment

Pickthall : Allah, unto Whom belongeth whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth. and woe unto the disbelievers from an awful doom;

Yusuf Ali : Of Allah, to Whom do belong all things in the heavens and on earth! But alas for the Unbelievers for a terrible penalty (their Unfaith will bring them)!-

Shakir : (Of) Allah, Whose is whatever is in the heavens and whatever Is in the earth; and woe to the unbelievers on account of the severe chastisement,

Dr. Ghali : Allah, Who has whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth. And woe to the disbelievers for a strict torment!

Tafsir Jalalayn : God (Allāhi, read in the genitive as a substitution or an explicative supplement, with what follows being an adjectival qualification; or [read as] Allāhu in the nominative as a subject, the predicate of which is [what follows]) to Whom belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth, as possessions, creatures and servants. And woe to the disbelievers from a terrible chastisement,

Sahih International : The ones who prefer the worldly life over the Hereafter and avert [people] from the way of Allah , seeking to make it (seem) deviant. Those are in extreme error.

Pickthall : Those who love the life of the world more than the Hereafter, and debar (men) from the way of Allah and would have it crooked: such are far astray.

Yusuf Ali : Those who love the life of this world more than the Hereafter, who hinder (men) from the Path of Allah and seek therein something crooked: they are astray by a long distance.

Shakir : (To) those who love this world's life more than the hereafter, and turn away from Allah's path and desire to make it crooked; these are in a great error.

Dr. Ghali : The ones who (show) love for the present life (Literally: the lowly life, i.e., the life of this world) over the Hereafter, and bar from the way of Allah, and inequitably seek to make it crooked, those are in far error.

Tafsir Jalalayn : those who (alladhīna is a description) prefer, choose, the life of this world over the Hereafter, and bar, people, from God’s way, [from] the religion of Islam, and seek to make it, that is, the path, crooked — those, they are far astray, from the truth.

Sahih International : And We did not send any messenger except [speaking] in the language of his people to state clearly for them, and Allah sends astray [thereby] whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

Pickthall : And We never sent a messenger save with the language of his folk, that he might make (the message) clear for them. Then Allah sendeth whom He will astray, and guideth whom He will. He is the Mighty, the Wise.

Yusuf Ali : We sent not a messenger except (to teach) in the language of his (own) people, in order to make (things) clear to them. Now Allah leaves straying those whom He pleases and guides whom He pleases: and He is Exalted in power, full of Wisdom.

Shakir : And We did not send any messenger but with the language of his people, so that he might explain to them clearly; then Allah makes whom He pleases err and He guides whom He pleases and He is the Mighty, the Wise.

Dr. Ghali : And in no way have We sent any Messenger except with the tongue of his people, that he may make (the message) evident for them. Then Allah leads into error whomever He decides and guides whomever He decides; and He is The Ever-Mighty, The Ever-Wise.

Tafsir Jalalayn : And We have not sent any Messenger except with the tongue, with the language, of his people, that he might make [the Message] clear to them, that he might make them understand what he brings to them; God then sends astray whomever He will and He guides whomever He will; and He is the Mighty, in His kingdom, the Wise, in His actions.

Sahih International : And We certainly sent Moses with Our signs, [saying], "Bring out your people from darknesses into the light and remind them of the days of Allah ." Indeed in that are signs for everyone patient and grateful.

Pickthall : We verily sent Moses with Our revelations, saying: Bring thy people forth from darkness unto light. And remind them of the days of Allah. Lo! therein are revelations for each steadfast, thankful (heart).

Yusuf Ali : We sent Moses with Our signs (and the command). "Bring out thy people from the depths of darkness into light, and teach them to remember the Days of Allah." Verily in this there are Signs for such as are firmly patient and constant,- grateful and appreciative.

Shakir : And certainly We sent Musa with Our communications, saying: Bring forth your people from utter darkness into light and remind them of the days of Allah; most surely there are signs in this for every patient, grateful one.

Dr. Ghali : And indeed We already sent Musa (Moses) with Our signs (saying), "Bring out your people out of darkness (es) to the light and remind them of the Days of Allah. Surely in that are signs indeed for everyone (who is) most patient, constantly thankful."

Tafsir Jalalayn : And verily We sent Moses with Our signs, the nine [signs], and We said to him: ‘Bring forth your people, the Children of Israel, out of darkness, [out of] unbelief, into light, [into] faith, and remind them of the Days of God’, of His graces. Surely in that, reminder, are signs for every man enduring, in obedience [to God], thankful, for [His] graces.

Sahih International : And [recall, O Children of Israel], when Moses said to His people, "Remember the favor of Allah upon you when He saved you from the people of Pharaoh, who were afflicting you with the worst torment and were slaughtering your [newborn] sons and keeping your females alive. And in that was a great trial from your Lord.

Pickthall : And (remind them) how Moses said unto his people: Remember Allah's favour unto you when He delivered you from Pharaoh's folk who were afflicting you with dreadful torment, and were slaying your sons and sparing your women; that was a tremendous trial from your Lord.

Yusuf Ali : Remember! Moses said to his people: "Call to mind the favour of Allah to you when He delivered you from the people of Pharaoh: they set you hard tasks and punishments, slaughtered your sons, and let your women-folk live: therein was a tremendous trial from your Lord."

Shakir : And when Musa said to his people: Call to mind Allah's favor to you when He delivered you from Firon's people, who subjected you to severe torment, and slew your sons and spared your women; and in this there was a great trial from your Lord.

Dr. Ghali : And as Musa said to his people, "Remember the favor of Allah upon you as He delivered you from the house of Firaawn, (Pharaoh) (who were) marking you out for odious torment, constantly slaying your sons and (sparing) alive your women; and in these (acts) was a tremendous trial from your Lord."

Tafsir Jalalayn : And, mention, when Moses said to his people, ‘Remember God’s grace to you when He delivered you from the folk of Pharaoh, who were inflicting upon you a dreadful chastisement, and were slaughtering your sons, the new-born, and sparing, keeping alive, your women — this was because some of the priests [of Egypt] had stated that a child born among the Israelites shall be the cause of the destruction of Pharaoh’s kingdom; and in that, deliverance — or [in that] chastisement — was a tremendous trial, grace — or [a tremendous] test — from your Lord.

Sahih International : And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.' "

Pickthall : And when your Lord proclaimed: If ye give thanks, I will give you more; but if ye are thankless, lo! My punishment is dire.

Yusuf Ali : And remember! your Lord caused to be declared (publicly): "If ye are grateful, I will add more (favours) unto you; But if ye show ingratitude, truly My punishment is terrible indeed."

Shakir : And when your Lord made it known: If you are grateful, I would certainly give to you more, and if you are ungrateful, My chastisement is truly severe.

Dr. Ghali : And as your Lord has notified (you), "Indeed in case you thank (Him), indeed I will definitely increase you and indeed in case you disbelieve, surely My torment is indeed strict."

Tafsir Jalalayn : And when your Lord proclaimed, [when] He made it known that: “If you are thankful, for My graces, through affirmation of [My] Oneness and obedience [to Me], then assuredly I shall give you more; but if you are thankless, [if] you deny [the truth of] the grace, through disbelief and disobedience, then assuredly I shall chastise you — as is indicated by [His following words] — My chastisement is indeed severe” ’.

Pickthall : And Moses said: Though ye and all who are in the earth prove thankless, lo! Allah verily is Absolute, Owner of Praise.

Yusuf Ali : And Moses said: "If ye show ingratitude, ye and all on earth together, yet is Allah free of all wants, worthy of all praise.

Shakir : And Musa said: If you are ungrateful, you and those on earth all together, most surely Allah is Self-sufficient, Praised;

Dr. Ghali : And Musa (Moses) said, "In case you disbelieve, you and whoever is in the earth altogether, then surely Allah is indeed Ever-Affluent, (Literally: Ever-Rich) Ever-Praiseworthy.

Sahih International : Has there not reached you the news of those before you - the people of Noah and 'Aad and Thamud and those after them? No one knows them but Allah . Their messengers brought them clear proofs, but they returned their hands to their mouths and said, "Indeed, we disbelieve in that with which you have been sent, and indeed we are, about that to which you invite us, in disquieting doubt."

Pickthall : Hath not the history of those before you reached you: the folk of Noah, and (the tribes of) A'ad and Thamud, and those after them? None save Allah knoweth them. Their messengers came unto them with clear proofs, but they thrust their hands into their mouths, and said: Lo! we disbelieve in that wherewith ye have been sent, and lo! we are in grave doubt concerning that to which ye call us.

Yusuf Ali : Has not the story reached you, (O people!), of those who (went) before you? - of the people of Noah, and 'Ad, and Thamud? - And of those who (came) after them? None knows them but Allah. To them came messengers with Clear (Signs); but they put their hands up to their mouths, and said: "We do deny (the mission) on which ye have been sent, and we are really in suspicious (disquieting) doubt as to that to which ye invite us."

None knows them except Allah. Their Messengers came to them with the Supreme evidences; yet they turned back their hands in their mouths (i.e., put their hands in their mouths "biting them in anger") and said, "Surely we disbelieve in what you have been sent with, and surely we are indeed in doubt concerning that to which you call us, causing suspicion."

Tafsir Jalalayn : Has there not come to you (an interrogative meant as an affirmative) the tidings, the news, of those who were before you — the people of Noah, and ‘Ād — the people of Hūd — and Thamūd — the people of Sālih — and those after them? None knows them save God. [This is] on account of their multitude. Their messengers brought them clear signs, with lucid arguments demonstrating their truthfulness; but they, that is, the communities, thrust their hands into their mouths, to bite on them, out of extreme spite, and said, ‘Lo! we disbelieve in that wherewith you have been sent, according to what you claim, and lo! we are in grave doubt concerning that to which you call us’, [doubt] creating [great] uncertainty.

Sahih International : Their messengers said, "Can there be doubt about Allah , Creator of the heavens and earth? They said, "You are not but men like us who wish to avert us from what our fathers were worshipping. So bring us a clear authority."

Pickthall : Their messengers said: Can there be doubt concerning Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth? He calleth you that He may forgive you your sins and reprieve you unto an appointed term. They said: Ye are but mortals like us, who would fain turn us away from what our fathers used to worship. They said, "Decidedly you are nothing except mortals like us; you would (like) to bar us from what our fathers were worshiping; then come up to us with an evident all-binding authority."

Tafsir Jalalayn : Their messengers said, ‘Can there be doubt concerning God (an interrogative meant as a denial), in other words, there can be no doubt concerning His Oneness, given the manifest proofs of it, the Originator, the Creator, of the heavens and the earth? He calls you, to obedience of Him, so that He might forgive you your sins (min dhunūbikum: min is extra, since through submission [to the One God] all that may have been committed previously is forgiven (or else it [min, ‘some of’] is partitive, intended to state that [forgiveness] which is due to [God’s] servants) and defer you, without chastisement, to an appointed term’, the term of death. They said, ‘You are but mortals like us, desiring to bar us from that which our fathers used to worship, in the way of idols. So bring us a clear warrant’, a manifest argument demonstrating your truthfulness.

Sahih International : The example of those who disbelieve in their Lord is [that] their deeds are like ashes which the wind blows forcefully on a stormy day; they are unable [to keep] from what they earned a [single] thing. That is what is extreme error.

Pickthall : A similitude of those who disbelieve in their Lord: Their works are as ashes which the wind bloweth hard upon a stormy day. They have no control of aught that they have earned. That is the extreme failure.

Yusuf Ali : The parable of those who reject their Lord is that their works are as ashes, on which the wind blows furiously on a tempestuous day: No power have they over aught that they have earned: that is the straying far, far (from the goal).

Shakir : The parable of those who disbelieve in their Lord: their actions are like ashes on which the wind blows hard on a stormy day; they shall not have power over any thing out of what they have earned; this is the great error.

Dr. Ghali : (Such) is the likeness of the ones who have disbelieved in their Lord: their deeds are like ashes on which the wind blows severely upon a tempestuous day; they are unable (to do) anything with whatever they have earned. That is the far error itself.

So do not blame me and blame yourselves. In no way can I be a screamer (i.e., able to every for help for you) for you, and in no way can you be screamers for me. Surely I disbelieved in your associating me (with Allah) earlier." Surely the unjust will have a painful torment.

Tafsir Jalalayn : And Satan, Iblīs, says, when the issue has been decided, and the people of Paradise are in Paradise and those of the Fire are in the Fire, and they [the people of the Fire] have gathered round him: ‘Truly God promised you a promise of truth, regarding resurrection and requital, fulfilling [it] to you; whereas I promised you, that this would not be, then failed you, for over you I had no warrant (min sultān: min is extra), [no] power or capacity, to compel you to follow me, except that I called you and you responded to me. So do not blame me, but blame yourselves, for having responded to me. I cannot heed your [distress] call, [I cannot] bring aid to you, nor can you heed mine (read bi-musrikhiyya or bi-musrikhī). Lo! I disbelieved in your making me an associate of God formerly’, during life on earth. God, exalted be He, says: Truly for the evildoers, the disbelievers, there shall be a painful chastisement.

Pickthall : Giving its fruit at every season by permission of its Lord? Allah coineth the similitudes for mankind in order that they may reflect.

Shakir : Yielding its fruit in every season by the permission of its Lord? And Allah sets forth parables for men that they may be mindful.

Dr. Ghali : It brings its crop every season (Literally: every while) by the permission of its Lord; and Allah strikes similitudes to mankind that possibly they would remind themselves.

Tafsir Jalalayn : it gives its produce, its fruit, every season by the leave of its Lord, by His will. Similarly, the words of faith are set firm in the heart of the believer; his works are raised up to heaven and he receives the blessings and reward therefrom all the time. Pickthall : My Lord! Lo! they have led many of mankind astray. But whoso followeth me, he verily is of me. And whoso disobeyeth me - Still Thou art Forgiving, Merciful.

Yusuf Ali : "O my Lord! they have indeed led astray many among mankind; He then who follows my (ways) is of me, and he that disobeys me,- but Thou art indeed Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.

Shakir : My Lord! surely they have led many men astray; then whoever follows me, he is surely of me, and whoever disobeys me, Thou surely arc Forgiving, Merciful:

Dr. Ghali : Lord! Surely they have led many of mankind into error. So whoever follows me, then surely he is of me; and whoever disobeys me, then surely You are Ever-Forgiving, Ever-Merciful.

Tafsir Jalalayn : My Lord, truly they, idols, have led many of mankind astray, because of their [mankind’s] worship of them. Sahih International : Our Lord, I have settled some of my descendants in an uncultivated valley near Your sacred House, our Lord, that they may establish prayer. So make hearts among the people incline toward them and provide for them from the fruits that they might be grateful.

Pickthall : Our Lord! Lo! I have settled some of my posterity in an uncultivable valley near unto Thy holy House, our Lord! that they may establish proper worship; so incline some hearts of men that they may yearn toward them, and provide Thou them with fruits in order that they may be thankful.

Yusuf Ali : "O our Lord! Shakir : O our Lord! surely I have settled a part of my offspring in a valley unproductive of fruit near Thy Sacred House, our Lord! that they may keep up prayer; therefore make the hearts of some people yearn towards them and provide them with fruits; haply they may be grateful:

Dr. Ghali : Our Lord, surely I have made (some) of my offspring to dwell in a valley that is not under cultivation (Literally: other than that "owning" plantation) at Your Inviolable Home, our Lord, that they may keep up the prayer. So make heart-sights of mankind yearn towards them and provide them with products, that possibly they would thank (You).

Tafsir Jalalayn : Our Lord, indeed I have made some of my seed, that is, Ishmael and his mother Hagar, to dwell in a valley where there is no sown land, namely, Mecca, by Your Sacred House, which had been there since before the Flood, our Lord, that they may establish prayer. So make some of the hearts of men yearn, incline and long, towards them — Ibn ‘Abbās said, ‘Had He said: “Make [all] the hearts of men …”, assuredly the Persians, the Byzantines and all of mankind would have yearned towards them’. Muhsin Khan : Indeed, they planned their plot, and their plot was with Allah, though their plot was a great (one, still) it would never be able to remove the mountains (real mountains or the Islamic law) from their places (as it is of no importance) [Tafsir Ibn Kathir, Vol. 2, Page 597]. [It is said by some interpreters regarding this Verse that the Quraish pagans plotted against Prophet Muhammad SAW to kill him but they failed and were unable to carry out their plot which they plotted].

Sahih International : And they had planned their plan, but with Allah is [recorded] their plan, even if their plan had been [sufficient] to do away with the mountains.

Pickthall : Verily they have plotted their plot, and their plot is with Allah, though their plot were one whereby the mountains should be moved.

Yusuf Ali : Mighty indeed were the plots which they made, but their plots were (well) within the sight of Allah, even though they were such as to shake the hills!

Shakir : And they have indeed planned their plan, but their plan is with Allah, though their plan was such that the mountains should pass away thereby.

Dr. Ghali : And they readily schemed their scheming, and their scheming is in the Providence of Allah, and decidedly their scheming was such that thereby mountains should be removed.

Tafsir Jalalayn : And verily they plotted, against the Prophet (s), their plot — when they desired to kill him, or detain him [in his house] or banish him — but their plotting is with God, that is to say, knowledge or the requital thereof [is with God], and their plotting, even though it be great, was not such whereby mountains should be moved, meaning that it is not of any importance, but that they are only harming themselves thereby. It is said that the use of ‘mountains’ here is meant to be literal; alternatively, it is also said [to be a reference to] the laws of Islam, which are likened to these [mountains] in the way that they are established and fixed (a variant reading has la-tazūlu [instead of li-tazūla], with in softened [from inna, ‘verily’], in which case the intended meaning is that [the extent of] their plotting is great. It is said that ‘plotting’ here is [actually a reference to] their unbelief. This second [reading] is consonant with [God’s saying]: Whereby the heavens are almost torn and the earth split asunder and the mountains fall crashing [Q. 19:90]; according to the former [reading], however, one should read it as [if it were] wa-mā kāna, and [their plotting] was not such …).

Pickthall : So think not that Allah will fail to keep His promise to His messengers. Lo! Allah is Mighty, Able to Requite (the wrong).

Yusuf Ali : Never think that Allah would fail his messengers in His promise: for Allah is Exalted in power, - the Lord of Retribution.

Shakir : Therefore do not think Allah (to be one) failing in His promise to His messengers; surely Allah is Mighty, the Lord of Retribution.

Dr. Ghali : So do definitely not reckon that Allah will fail in His promise to His Messengers; surely Allah is Ever-Mighty, Owner of vengeance.

Muslim relates the following hadīth: ‘The Prophet (s) was asked, “Where will people be on that day?” He said, “On the Bridge (sirāt)” ’; and they shall come forth, they shall exit from [their] graves, to God, the One, the Almighty.

Sahih International : And you will see the criminals that Day bound together in shackles,

Pickthall : Thou wilt see the guilty on that day linked together in chains,

Yusuf Ali : And thou wilt see the sinners that day bound together in fetters;-

Shakir : And you will see the guilty on that day linked together in chains.

Dr. Ghali : And you will see the criminals upon that Day interlinked in the fetters,

Tafsir Jalalayn : And you shall see, O Muhammad (s), the sinners, the disbelievers, on that day coupled, chained together with their [individual] devils, in chains, manacles or collars,

Yusuf Ali : Their garments of liquid pitch, and their faces covered with Fire;

Shakir : Their shirts made of pitch and the fire covering their faces

Dr. Ghali : Their apparels of pitch, and their faces enveloped by the Fire.

Tafsir Jalalayn : their shirts [made] of pitch, because it ignites fire more intensely, and their faces are engulfed by the Fire,

Muhsin Khan : That Allah may requite each person according to what he has earned. Truly, Allah is Swift at reckoning.

Sahih International : So that Allah will recompense every soul for what it earned. Indeed, Allah is swift in account.

Pickthall : That Allah may repay each soul what it hath earned. Lo! Allah is swift at reckoning.

Yusuf Ali : That Allah may requite each soul according to its deserts; and verily Allah is swift in calling to account.

Shakir : That Allah may requite each soul (according to) what it has earned; surely Allah is swift in reckoning.

Dr. Ghali : That Allah may recompense every self for what it has earned; surely Allah is Swift at the reckoning.

Tafsir Jalalayn : that God may requite (li-yajziya is semantically connected to [the verb] barazū, ‘they shall come forth’) every soul for what it has earned, of good and evil. Truly God is swift at reckoning — He shall reckon with all creatures in about half a day of the days of this world, as one hadīth states to that effect.

Muhsin Khan : This (Quran) is a Message for mankind (and a clear proof against them), in order that they may be warned thereby, and that they may know that He is the only One Ilah (God - Allah) - (none has the right to be worshipped but Allah), and that men of understanding may take heed.

Sahih International : This [Qur'an] is notification for the people that they may be warned thereby and that they may know that He is but one God and that those of understanding will be reminded.

Pickthall : This is a clear message for mankind in order that they may be warned thereby, and that they may know that He is only One Allah, and that men of understanding may take heed.

Yusuf Ali : Here is a Message for mankind: Let them take warning therefrom, and let them know that He is (no other than) One Allah: let men of understanding take heed.

Shakir : This is a sufficient exposition for the people and that they may be warned thereby, and that they may know that He is One Allah and that those possessed of understanding may mind.

Dr. Ghali : This is a proclamation for mankind and that they may be warned by it, and that they may know that He is One God, and that all (the ones) endowed with intellects may constantly remember.

Tafsir Jalalayn : This, Qur’ān, is a Proclamation for mankind, in other words, it was revealed in order to proclaim to them, and so that they may be warned thereby, and that they may know, by way of the arguments contained in it, that He, namely, God, is One God, and that people of pith, possessors of intellect, may remember (yadhdhakkara: the original tā’ [of yatadhakkara] has been assimilated with the dhāl), [that they] may be admonished.
